i guess i could post this here, since oil defenatly touches the part.
do need a special tool to align the oil pan??
i know i need one for the front timing chain and rear covers, but wouldn't alligning the covers take care of aligning the pan since it will sit (the pan) flush with the covers???
any tips for installing the covers and pan??? (engine is out of vehicle)

A momax (straight edge) bar on the back side of the block while checking for any(!) light between the pan and the bar *should* be sufficient. Definitely don't want any misalignment between the engine and the tranny (leakage).
Aligning the timing chain cover is "common sense" thing. Yes, GM sells a tool to align the cover, but practically nobody uses it. Visual will work just fine.
