Well guys, after looking into this. I have decided on getting the Katech timing chain with the cloyes gears.
Anyone else think that is a good idea besides me?
For those that dont know, the KATECH chain "HME" is used in the C5R engine and can be revved to the moon. This looks like a really reasonable decision to me.

Well, you have 1 of 3 options:

1. A Rollmaster or Jwis single chain [and] new timing gears. Have fun trying to replace the crank gear. It can be a real pain in the *** from what has been written here in the past.

2. A double chain setup: If you buy the Rollmaster/SLP double chain, then not only will you have to replace the timing gears, but also need to remove and shim the oil pump (involves lowering the oil pan) Another pain in the ***.

3. Replace the chain by itself with the Rollmaster or Jwis single chain which is superior to the stock chain. Continue to use your stock GM timing gears.

Well, I vote for the chain replacement only. The single Jwis or Rollmaster should not break or stretch as much as the factory GM/Renold chain. Its just becomes a "plug and play" option.

Someone posted that they want to use a Katech chain and Cloyes gears. I dont believe Cloyes sells just the timing gears by themselves. Buying a Cloyes timing set just to get the gears and then a Katech chain would be an expensive proposition. I dont think there is anything wrong with the factory crank and cam timing gears, unless you just like to buy parts.

Ron,

BTW.... That Katech supplied single chain can be purchased from other sources cheaper than what Katech is selling them for.

Someone posted that a company called HME sells them for around 90 bucks. Cant find there web page.

I put on the Cloyes set with a Jwis chain from Katech. Not cheap, but good insurance. However, I was honestly surprised at how little difference there was between the stock chain (that accompanied the Cloyes setup, and the one that came out) and the Jwis chain. Yes, the Jwis was 'beefier', but it was only a *little* beefier. It takes some close comparison to see the differences.

I did an ARE oil pump at the same time. So far so good... Just wish it'd all lasted longer than my tranny did. "Transmission, you're the weakest link... Good bye."

Well, I did some checking.

The Rollmaster and Jwis chain are indeed 2 different chains:

The "Rollmaster" chain is actually manufactured by ROMAC in Brisbane, Australia

The "Jwis" is manufactured by Iwis Ketten in Munich, Germany

The GM factory chain is manufactured by Renold in Manchester, UK

Camaroholic:
It's not so much that the Jwis is thicker as much as it is that the metal used in the Jwis is stronger.

Rollmaster do not manufacture chain....they use Jwis Ketten chains manufactured in Germany and have done for over 13 years.

Rollmaster manufacture timing gear sets and as they make the best gear sets in the world they use the best chain in the world....Jwis Ketten.

The above is 100% accurate as I have sold and used their product for over 15 years...

My bad...

I certainly believe you. The ROMAC website would have you believe that the Rollmaster is manufactured in-house by ROMAC and not supplied by Iwis in Germany.

Thanks for the info.

I am going to save your e-mail address and purchase the Rollmaster/Jwis single chain as soon as I leave Korea for the US.

Thanks again for the clarification

Cloyes has a serious super strong IRL chain that they use on Nascar hi rev engines. I got one and it is really beefy...

1. Is it a single chain that can be used with the stock GM timing gears?

2. Was any name stamped on it indicating who manufactured it? Actually manufactured by Cloyes?

3. How much?

Thanks......

4. Oh Ya, and who did you buy it from?

The Cloyes/IRL chain is actually made by Renolds. It is noticeably different from the stock and Jwis chains. It has huge plates. It may be the same size as stock or might be .5" longer. Longer wouldn't be great in my book.

It is expensive at $200-$50 for the chain IF you can find one.

can someone post the best place to get this JWIS chain rather than KATECH. I have emailed them several times with no response so I will take my business elsewhere.

If the Katech chain is the one being used in the C5R engines, couldnt we simply go to the dealer and pick one up?

This chain is much more than the stock one (FACT) it is thicker and a bit pricer (300-350) then the stock replacement cloyes chain. It comes with your timing gears and the same length stock chain just thicker and I can tell a big difference between the stock replacement cloyes and the IRL cloyes. Look up cloyes and give them a call, they will be able to give you more info....

And the Rollmaster gears are adjustable.
I do not know if the Katech gears are, but if ya gonna buy a new Timing chain why not avail yourself to dial in your cam while you at it?

Remember dialing in cams?

there is no mention of this at all thruout this topic.
