Default lets talk timing chains

ok im getting a Xtreme 224 .563 114 cam and a Katech oil pump. I was wondering do i need to do the timing chain or not?

i have 37k on my 98. What should I do? Can i just get a new chain or what? How much is just the chain gonna run if that would work, and who has it

im on a budget here and if i really dont need it ill get it this fall. My cuz does all of my work so i get VERY good install prices so i can do it later...

Yes, same size as stock. Should be considered a minimum upgrade for Cam installs.

FWIW, I hear aftermarket springs and downshifting contributes to most stock chain breakages. I forget the reason why with the springs.

And how can you prevent it? Just the chain?

IMO, the Rollmaster double roller is the *best* set-up available for the LS1. Hard to believe any single chain can be stronger, less prone to stretching (more reliable for timing), or more resistant to harmonics than twins.

And, the Rollmaster is inexpensive, too.

Get an aftermarket chain. My 10K mile change broke after 3K miles with stage II heads and cam.

I have plans to install a cam shortly also, still need to zero in on a specific cam, but does anyone know where to order one of the double set chains, or the rollermaster? Thanks.

Is this a necessity for running mid high 11's?

If so, I am going to look into getting one this week.

Not a necessity. It's more like "insurance" for those of us who are tired of breaking t-chains...

Katek is only a single chain, but the rollmaster is a double chain with the gears.....
