Default 1998 engines

Can a 1998 engine be modded like a 1999-02? I heard that the liners are thinner, heads and coilpacks are different. What changes need to be made if installing a newer engine, other than an LS6 intake and eliminating the EGR.

the cylinder liners are a bit thinner, but that doesn't matter since none of them are boreable anyways. They can handle a light clean-up honing if you ever rebuild it, just like the other year LS1s.

The 98 heads are the same as the 99-02 internally, they have identical intake and exhaust port shapes. The only difference is how the valvecovers are mounted. The 99+ have only 4 bolts holding the covers on, the 98s have about 10 going around the perimeter of each cover, making it more of a pain in the *** to service.

Coil packs are identical, but the 99+ has them mounted on brackets which attach to the valvecovers (easier to remove for service). The 98s have them bolted directly to the covers individually.

All of the LS1s and LS6 stuff bolts on no problem. If you ever get some ported 99+ heads, just make sure you get some matching valvecovers too.
