Default valvetrain noise??

i just installed a new motor , and it only has 20 miles on it, but there is a great deal of valvetrain noise !!

i redid the preload on the rockers ( crane cams 1.8 rockers)and just lossened the rocker nut, then hand tightened it till i couldn't go any further. i then tightened it 3/4 to 7/8 of a turn. the noise is less but it's still noticable.
any ideas??
i used new compcams stock replacement lifters and the motor is a fresh rebuild with 20 miles on it.

what springs are you using? I just did heads/cam/headers, and went with dual springs and they are considerably noisier than stock. I thought I had a lifter problem, but it was just a noisy valvetrain.

I run Comp Cams double springs with Crane Hyd Lifters. The cam is a lunati custom 226/226 .554 . My valvetrain is as noisy as hell. I have rechecked my rockers, lifters, exhaust... have all but raped my car, but have come to the conclusion that it is just a noisy-*** valvetrain.

I can clearly hear mine from inside the car. Yes, it is annoying, but on the bright side I can hear exactly how the valvetrain is doing.

the weired thing is that the noise increases sometimes and quites down later . and it's not from the whole valvetrain , it's a single clicking noise; something like a header leak ( i checked the headers for leaks).

i use 918 springs and crane adjustable 1.8 rockers if that helps.

Welcome to the club. It sounds like you will be another one of our long-time members.

The 918 springs that I had were only slightly louder than stock. I also had the oversized titanium retainers that came with the earlier sets. So mine was louder than everyone elses. Still it wasn't loud enough for me to give it any kind of concern. However, I was on the stock cam and rockers.

For the record, and perhaps for you to relate to, my ticking sounds like it is isolated to one lifter as well..... sometimes. It also gets louder and then softer. My ticking increases depending on how much oil is in the car. My ticking takes about 100 miles after pulling the heads to come back into play (I don't get it either, but after 3 head pulls, that is the way it is)

I know that my ticking is directly related to what weight oil is in the car. The heavier oil that I run, the less ticking there is. As a consequence, the dirtier the oil, the louder the ticking. At least I know when to change my oil

What year is the car, and what year is your engine? What type of lifters did you put in the car? There are two styles of OEM replacement. One has a shroud covering the roller, the other has an open roller.

thanks for welcoming me!!
the weired thing is that this is the same setup a what i had before, except for the higher lift cam and new stock lifters.

i drive a 99 camaro and the engine is a 2000 fresh rebuild 6.0 . th elifters are stock replacement with the shroud around wheel.

could longer pushrods cause this noise??

I have a 2000 block as well (not 6.0 ) with the older OEM replacement lifters in (the ones with the shroud). Mine ticks especially from about 2000 to a little over 3000 rpm. Above this, and the isolated ticking blurrs in with the rest of the valvetrain.

Here is my theory. Take it or leave it.

According to Crane Tech Support, the older style lifters (the one with the shroud over the wheel) should not be used in the newer style block because of excess oil passing. For the newer style block the newer (unshrouded wheel) lifters should be used. All the engine builders that I talked to (read, the sponsers) said this was B.S. and it won't make a difference. However, if you stand the two lifters side by side, they are very very different. The oil feed hole is on a different axis and everything.

I think that using the older lifter design in the newer block somehow affects the lifter pumping up. Combine this with an aggressive cam and heavy valvetrain and WALLA you have a 400+ HP ticking beast.

This is why I think my ticking is so sensitive to oil, fades in and out, and tends to shift from side to side, because at some point between 2000 and 3500 rpm one of my lifters isn't pumping up properly. Above 3000 rpm oil pressure builds in the block, and everything starts to go as planned.

As usual, it is long winded, but take it or leave it.

Good Luck

makes you think......
the shifting noise source and the sensetivity to oil pressure make you wounder...
