Very interesting topic Vince. My question would be where is money better spent if both cars start off with a sleeved LS1: a 4" crank or solid roller conversion?

how much is a crank? $2200?
what about rockers, valvecovers, wires, lifters, etc.? $1800?

hmmm...not much of a difference...perhaps it all depends on driving style.

I was wondering if a 382 or 393 all bore solid roller can put out as much power as a 422 or 427ci Hyd Roller setup? Would this even be worth a try?

opinion: no, i think it has been said that at the same rpm a 422-434 will make more power than a 382-393 all else being equal. But at what price? Crank are expensive. You also have to look at what you're comparing it to. Will a solid roller 393 whoop up on an ARE 436. yes. will it make more power than a well done hyd. MTI 422 or 434? i doubt it. But still, that 422 is around 2K dollars more. Id go with the solid all bore becuase it'd be FUN and sound SO good. But thats just me.

Ryan you kill me with the slide in remarks about some tuners.. Anyway. We have already seen a 393ci Hyd dyno 480rwhp plus.. I would think a solid roller setup on the same engine would put out over 500rwhp..

Vince, think in a logical order here. You know whatever we end up doing, we always tend to upgrade down the road. Its MUCH easier to upgrade a stroker into a solid roller later. If you had a smaller solid roller motor and wanted to upgrade to a stroker, it would cost more. New sleeved block, pistons, crankshaft, opening the chambers on the heads, larger valves, etc...

My 434ci for example, it would be pretty easy to swap in a solid roller setup. The heads and bottom end don't change at all.

Vince, I will have several setups done shortly:
-432 solid roller <img border="0" title="" alt="[Razz]" src="gr_tounge.gif" />
-393 solid roller
-346 high RPM solid roller

Plus get to run mine on slicks and in race trim <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

In reality, 2 motors of equal parts and size, one solid the other hyd. The solid motor will make more TQ, HP have better drivabilty and accelerate MUCH harder down the track, if the cam is spec'd correctly <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

Comparing different size motors is hard. A 382\393 can make equal power and track times,but it will take more RPM and car setup's than a 427\432,which as a torque advantage <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

Ryan mentioned using long rods in his ultimate setup. How do long rods make more power? Is it just a matter of compression?

some say that longer rods will help with high rpms. less side loading and a better rod/stroke ratio. some dont care, some do. I would still go with the longest rod you could depending on your desired comp. height and given stroke/deck height.

I still say everyone should have solid rollers <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />
