Default Had Pinion Seal Replaced... Now Rear is Clinking!

Reverse... Ka-*****
Drive... Ka-*****
Reverse... Ka-*****
Drive... Ka-*****

I took it back to them, and they heard the noise coming right from where the drive shaft goes into the rear, and said it was the rear U-joint.

I let them replace that since they only wanted $60, but THAT DIDN'T FIX IT, so they didn’t charge me for it.

They said the noise has NOTHING to do with them changing the Pinion Seal... But I NEVER HAD ANY REAR END NOISES until they f*cked with my Rear End.

The guy said to drive it home, and see if it goes away in a few days, and come back if it doesn't.

So, now it's been a week and the clinking noise has not gone away.

I called the place and I told him It's still clinking, and that I did some research on the web on some LS1 sites, and a lot of guys said it can DEFINATELY be from the pinion seal change.

I told him they said the noise could be from:

The Yoke, Crush Sleeve, Pinion Nut tightness, or Pinion Depth.

He said, "Those guys on the forums are just guessing, and a lot of times don't know what they're talking about."

Then he refuted each claim one at a time with technical jargon that was over my head.

I said, “Then you think it has nothing to with the Pinion Seal change?”.

He said, “I KNOW it has nothing to do with it!”.

And I said “Well then what should I do?”

He said, “Bring it in and we'll have to take the whole rear apart, and find what's wrong”.

I said, “What will that cost me?”

He said, “We wont know until we open it up.”

So it looks like no matter what, they are gonna deny they did anything wrong.
And they also seem intent on charging me extra money in addition to the $406 they charged me already.

I also had these guys replace a few bent push rods.
I dropped off my car on Monday, and picked it up that Friday.
And when I got there I drove it a bit, and the engine started smoking!
The Valve cover gasket was leaking!
Took 5 minutes of driving to see it, but they had the car ALL WEEK!!!
So then I had to wait there a couple hours for them to get around to putting a new gasket on.

I also asked them to make my brakes stop squealing.
The guy said I needed new, Pads, Rotors, Calipers, and Brake lines.
They wanted $800 for the job.
I took it to my dad’s house and me and him replaced the raybestos pads with expensive ceramic Pro-Act pads, and the SQEALING DISAPEARED!
We inspected everything else and it was all FINE!
It was a $80 job, not $800!!!

Let alone, them replacing the pinion seal, and then having a new noise coming from the rear-end.
AND THEN the manager says "It's the U-Joint", and says it'll be $60.
I wait another couple hours for that.
Then the mechanic took it for a spin and pulled up, and shut it off, and said "ALL FIXED".
I said.. "The clicking is gone?"... he said "YUP".
Not trusting him, I get in, and put it in drive-reverse-drive-reverse.
It's STILL CLICKING!!!... so I go get the manager.. and he says "Yeah your right it still is clicking".
And he yelled to the mechanic..."You said it was fixed!"
The mechanic yells back.. "I thought it was!"
And I'm like....WTF???

Should I even go back to these guys?

Wrench turners are a dime a dozen-good mechanics are hard to find. Always try to find out as much as you can about what you want done before you pay someone else to do it-or pay for it time and time again. FWIW.

The cheap way to replace a rear axle pinion seal is to:
Mark the nut in relationship to the pinion.
Remove the pinion nut.
Pull off the yoke.
Replace the seal.
Replace the pinion nut till the nut aligns with the mark on the pinion.

It sounds like the mechanic did not tighten down the pinion nut enough. He probably did not even mark the nut to the pinion.

The pinion bearings need a certain amount of preload that is measured with an inch pound torque wrench with the ring gear out of the rear end.

The crush sleeve loads the pinion nut so it will not loosen.

It could be possible to tighten the pinion nut a little until the proper pre-load is achieved as long as the crush sleeve is not over crushed.
