Default Oil Psi

Ok I figured I would start here with the questions, I was at the track tonight waiting in line and I noticed that at idle my oil pressure guage was going back and forth anywhere from like 30-40 psi without me touching the gas or anything, and Ive never even seen it go below 40. (BTW I have a 2000 firehawk, only mods are cat back and lid so its pretty much stock). I was talking to a guy there that builds engine but not specially ls1's so he was just making educated guesses, and he was thinking that it would be the electronic sending unit rather than anything else.
So let the opinions come, I need as much input as possible!!

No def not normal, this is my second trans am and neither one has ever done it, plus I've never seen another fbody let alone another car have varying oil pressure at idle

I have a '98 Z vert A4 with 110K on the clock. It has done the same thing sporadically since about 88K miles. Mine twitches with a small left right movement. Does not do it all the time, just once in a while. I am HOPING it's the sensor.

When the car heats up the oil breaks down and gets thinner, which is why the pressure goes down a little. Thats pretty normal for idle. As long as the pressure goes up along with the rpm's, your fine.

10 psi for every 1000 rpms minimum is the "rule of thumb"
mine does the same - & on hot summer days will drop down to 20 @ idle

persoinally i switched from Mobil 1 & AUTOMATICALLY saw average 5-10 PSI more... M1 runs thinner then other companies

i use Castrol now & will be switching to Redline

Yea thats what I been using is castrol, but this is my second trans am and neither has ever gone below 40 no matter how hot or hard I pushed it. But I just changed the oil the other week, and thats when it started happening. Does anyone know where the oil pressure sensor is located? Because if its near the filter that explains it, because I really had to beat the hell out of mine to get it off.

The filter should come off fairly easy. Why did you have to beat the hell outta it?

Oil pressure sender is behind the intake manifold on the driver's side of the block.

correct.

The intake manifold has to come off to get to it though. I doubt there is anyone on here who has done it without taking the intake off while the engine is in the car. If someone has, please tell us how and what you had to do to get the the sending unit. I'd like to know for future reference. Thanks.

I don't think it would be possible with the manifold still on. I have tons more room in my truck and I can't even get to mine with the manifold installed.

Well, the truck manifold is a lot taller than the car manifold, so that might be part of it.
