It's actually not that bad without a lift. If you're doing it in your garage, you're gonna need a engine hoist. Here are some general things you'll need to do....

I always pull the intake when pulling an LS1. You don't "have" to, but it only takes 10 minutes and gives you MUCH more clearance. Take out the radiator, unhook all necessary hoses. Pull the transmission out of the car. Then, start unbolting the motor mounts. On the pass. side you'll have to pull the AC compressor, on the other side I can access the motor mount bolt pretty easy. To bolt up the hoist, I used a hole on the FRONT of the driver's side head, and the REAR of the pass. side head.

It's not really that much of a job. Can be done in one day no prob, especially if you have a buddy around wanting to help. Feel free to drop me an email if you have any more questions....

Josh

uhh, do it from the bottom. you wont regret it. it's sooo much easier than you'd think cause everything sits where you can manuver around it once you get the cradle out of the car. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

Josh , You didn't have to remove the heads to get it out the top?

I have pulled the motor with T-56 still attached out the top. No problem. And thats how its going back in too. I did yank the pulley and the accessories as well as everything Damian mentioned.

Just pulled mine last Monday and did so in my home garage. Did it from the bottom. Took two people, three floor jacks (two under K-member and one under tranny to triangulate), and an engine hoist. We used the engine hoist to lift the front of the car higher once the k-member was on the ground. That gave us the clearance we needed to roll the engine out.

My son had the tedious stuff done in advance, so the only thing we had to do was drop it. Dropping it took about an hour.

All in all it was not that hard with the right equipment and a couple of hands. I guess that all total it could be done in about 3 hours or less.

I dropped mine on the cradle out the bottom with the rear on rhino ramps and the front up on my 6-ton jackstands... Can be done in ~3 hours taking your time to be careful once you know what needs to be taken apart and what doesn't. FWIW, I lowered the cradle down onto a furniture pallet, then just rolled it out the front of the car. The AC (still charged) and radiator are still in the car.

What did you do about the springs etc , Don't you have to have the front end lined up afterward ?

you don't have to take any of your front suspension apart, it all drops out in one piece out the bottom... Once you roll it out from under the car, just undo the motor mounts and you're done... Once you are ready for inatallation, just bolt the motor back to the mounts, slide the cradle under the car, lift it up and bolt it back in. All done.

Anyone have pictures of dropping the engine out the bottom? I know a ran across a site where a guy had pictures, but can't find it.

The pictures I saw, the guy happened to have a lift in his garage! I thought it looked easier to pull it out the bottom, but figured you needed a lift.

Now I have read a few posts from people who did it in their garage without a lift, and I am more interested again.

Thanks for any links or pictures.
