PF58 Oil FIlter
Since I'm gathering up the last few things I need to start installing my motor tomorrow (hopefully), I went ahead and picked up some PF58 oil filters instead of the PF44. How much extra capacity does the PF58 have? If I'm thinking correctly, it's .5qt, so I'd put a total of 6qts. in the car instead of the normal 5.5gts.
Sound right?

Re: PF58 Oil FIlter
Hey - one thing to be careful about -
I looked at putting a larger oil filter on my motor, and then noticed that under full throttle, there would be a *possibility* that my headers could hit the oil filter due to them getting twisted over by engine torque. Make sure that you have considered this before putting on a larger filter. Obviously, this would also depend upon the size and location of the headers. Mine are Dynatechs.

Re: PF58 Oil FIlter
Thanks guys... 6qts it is.
As far as the motor moving, I have a .25" stainless steel torque strap holding the motor in place. It doesn't move.

Re: PF58 Oil FIlter
Here's the note from Install University on the difference in capacities.
Rank Brand Part Number
1 AC Delco Ultraguard Gold UPF58*
2 Mobil 1 M1-206**
3 Mobil 1 (Stock Size) M1-107
4 AC Delco PF58***
5 AC Delco (Stock Filter) PF44
* Larger than filter PF44 and offers better filtering than the PF58 (will hold 1/4 quart more of oil than the PF44 filter)
** Larger than filter M1-107 (will hold 1/4 quart more of oil than the M1-107 filter)
*** Larger than filter PF44 (will hold 1/4 quart more of oil than the PF44 filter)

Re: PF58 Oil FIlter
hmmmm what does runnig the car a 1/2 quart over full hurt? I'm still on the stock motor w. 68,800 on it, and i put the m1 107 w/ 6 quarts of m1 in it everytime... i dog the hell out of it too, and it doesn't burn any oil.

Re: PF58 Oil FIlter
Even with the stock sized oil filter (which I personally think is way too small!) you can put in 6 quarts, or more. A few autocross guys will put in 7 quarts of oil in the LS1 f-body without problems. I know Mitchntx has been doing this in his 98TA for years now, and he's got about 80 or 90k on his engine now with no problems.

Re: PF58 Oil FIlter
Guys, PF59 is closer to right application for LS1 and its used on stock 6.0 LS1 motors. I have used this all along and i fill with 6 quarts.Overfilling is bad because crank whips sump oil and aerates it, this foams oil and foamed oil cant support bearing loads and doesnt lubricate properly, low oil is better than overly high level. Only use 5.5 quarts with PF44 filter, apparently pf58 is working for people but using pf59 would be closer to GM spec. because of its 6.0 use IMO.This would be important for warranty issues.

Re: PF58 Oil FIlter
The PF59 is the same as the PF58, just with the addition of an antidrainback valve. You can use either filter with identical results. If anything I might shy away from the PF59 for a possible oil flow restriction due to that antidrainback valve (although it would be very minimal if at all)

Re: PF58 Oil FIlter
I've run them all I forget but one of those filters is pretty darn tall, maybe too tall.
I think running the PF58 + 6qts is fine.
LS1derfull the Z06 owner's manuall reccomends running over for autocrossing I don't think it's that bad of a thing except that too much might result in a lot of consumption thru the pcv.

Re: PF58 Oil FIlter
Foaming will be more of a problem with Dino oil than synthetics which are design to last longer before breaking down.
It also appears to me that the blue printed oil pumps from sponsors like ARE, MTI and MMS can sustain the use of more oil. They do a better job of keeping the oil up where it belongs protecting parts.
As far as warranty risks of over filling... if you bleed to stock before you go in for work... how are they going to know you consumed more oil from running 6 quarts than you would have at running 5.5 quarts?
