Weird, check PtV clearances at all? The starter shouldn't be making any clunking sounds when turning the motor over by hand unless it is stuck in the pushed out position. I imagine a valve or pushrod would bend before the starter breaks if there is contact.
On my old third gen, I put LT1 heads and intake on a 355 SBC with flat-tops and had a CR somewhere between 10.5 and 11. A stock small block starter wouldn't turn it over, and neither would a standard mini-starter. Car cranked real slow and one of the starters actually began to smoke. Ended up having to use a high-torque ministarter. I doubt that's your problem though because you have a large cam which should drop your cranking compression quite a bit.

yeah, im sure that it has nothing to do with the cam/heads that i put in, for it will turn over and over and over by hand. iv had starters go out before but this one just blew up... craziest damn thing i have ever seen.
cr is at 10.5 for its just stock milled ls6 heads ( ported of course )

could it be hydralocking? coolant leaking into a cylinder? try pressure testing the radiator, or taking the plugs out and rotating the engine by hand with a wrench on the crank bolt. does it turn? does liquid come out of the spark plug holes? I can see some warranry work in your future

this is a serious note for all people doing heads and cam..... the engine hydrolocked and blew off the starter. i had everything perfect ( or so i thought) .... off to tsp to buy some head bolts and gaskets...

i have done numerous head swaps and there was absolutely no reason for this to happen... by no means am i really good or anything, but it doesnt take too much of a genius to put heads on after you did it once before. the head gasket just didnt seal on EVERY SINGLE water jacket ( at the top ) and it just pissed coolant into the engine ever so slowly. this time im going to get the cometics with arp head studs. sick and tired of this ..... lol... jason at texas speed said he would look at the head for me if i shipped it to him, to make sure the valve is not bent. the valves look pretty good. im not sure if im going to ship it back or not.... prolly will...
this really is serious for people thinking about doing a heads/cam install. that block must be PERFECT. and we had contradictory stories on the proper procedure to torque the heads.... dealer said 73 degrees x 2 and ls1 howto says 90 x 2 i did the 73. this time no more angles.

yeah, deck has to be spotless and FLAT. as well as your heads if you want to use cometics. thats what I used and I made sure there were no scratches, dirt, oil, coolant, warped surfaces. my eng. only has 6K miles on it, so the deckl cleaned up realy easy, and I go tthe heads milled to ensure a flat, smooth surface for the gasket to seal against. you should hve him check it for flatness too. what heads do you have?
