Default Valve cover gasket questions......

I have had the valve covers offof my 2000 Z28 3 or 4 times now, and the last time I had a problem. When I reinstalled the valve cover and gasket, it leaked from the back side. So, I removed it again, and the gasket was out of its groove. When I tried to put it back in its groove, it wouldn't go back in, like it was too big. Waaayyy too big. I could squeeze and force the gasket into the groove, but the slightest bump or grab on the gasket would pop it out of its groove. Now, I assume that a new gasket will fix this, but I have a few questions:

1) What is the part number and price for a valve cover gasket for a 2000 Z28 (driver side if it matters)? Can I get just one, or do they come in a pair?

2)Has anyone else had this trouble, and, if so, why did it happen? Do these things "grow"?

Thanks, Shawn

We are the GM Parts (Scoggin-Dickey) sponsor! That is the correct part number, 12560696. I believe that is for one gasket. I will check this tomorrow at work. They can be ordered at www.sdpc2000.com for the price of $5.67 plus shipping and handling ($4.75).

SDPC...

My Bad!
Yes, you are a sponsor. I used GM.Part.Com as an example because they have a price calculator on there site.

Your price is better anyway!

Go with SDPC......

I have a set of brand new 99 gaskets and they are way to big it is just the commen thing it will fit you just have to make it work. once you get them in they fit good you just can let them come out or it will be a pain again. Try rolling them in from the out side in.

Yup they expand and cannot be put back in I watched a friend try for two hours and I felt sad.

Clean the valve cover with brake clean or something, put the new gasket in and voila it's good.

SDPC rocks for parts... GMParts charges a ton for shipping.

had that problem , even with a new gasket , it will expand after two days!!

the rolling from the outside in really helps . i tried brake cleaner but that didn't help much so i stuck the valve cover in the dishwasher . worked like a charm!!!!

if your gasket expands , try cutting it to size making sure you cut from the top. that's what i did.

A fine art is required to get the valve cover gaskets in nicely. At first they seem too big, but after coercing them using jedi mind melding they start to fit more and more...until...like magic...it totally fits.

After the valvecovers come on/off a few times, the gasket will swell some and not want to fit. I always just cut it with a razor blade and put it back in. I won't do that but one time, though, but I haven't ever had any leakage problems using this trick.

Well, I ended up cutting i at the top (so I could see if it was going to leak ) and, so far so good, no leaks as of yet. Thanks, Shawn
