Question 853 vs. 241 heads
I am second guessing myself, need some extra advice.

I am about to swap out my stock 241 heads off my '04 LS1 GTO for some Stage 2E ported heads from MTI, casting #853. These heads flow avg 294 @.600 for the intake and 208 @.600 for the exhaust.

Since this seems like going backwards (from the 241 heads), any good argument why I shouldn't do it or is there differences I have not accounted for? Is the later manufactured heads any different?

Funny part is one head is notched, the other aint. Now I need a pair of mixed head gaskets.

I honestly see no reason not to swap to the ported heads you have. From my understanding the 241's are only marginally better stock compared to 853's....and when ported they flow about the same. So I say run those MTI ported 853's.

I didnt think 853's were notched, only the 803's, but now im second guessing myself...

Good to know.

Yeah some 853s are notched. I'm looking at a set right here that are notched.. Also, the 241 vs. 853 question, the difference is VERY minimal between those two heads and it's only there before port work is done. Once ported, it doesn't matter what casting # you started out with. The semi-permanent molded heads only were better stock-for-stock.

wouldn't you have to buy perimeter bolt valve covers for the 853's?? If so i may have some for you soon . I also noticed that you are at fort belvoir which is right around the corner from where im at

maybe i am mistaking but aren't 853 heads the ones that came on the early LS1's that had perimeter bolt valve covers?? If they were the same then why would you have to switch to 99 or newer center bolt valve covers when you do a head swap on a 97 or 98 ls1?

The early heads were 806 heads IIRC.

I don't know about the earlier ones, but my 2000 had 853's on it with center bolt covers.
