Just had my fuel filter replaced and the mechanic noticed my pinion seal was just starting to leak...not major. Another guy told me most folks just leave it alone so long as they change diff. fluid every yr.
A permanent fix would cost over 400 bucks. Any thoughts folks?

You might want to just pay for it to get fixed. If you do any extended driving on it, it can go real bad on you. In may my buddy ran is 01 WS6 in the Nevada Open Road Challenge and lost his seal at high speeds. The vibration that the car started making were fairly violent from what he said. I was waiting for him at the finish and saw him limping the car in. Apparently extended periods of high heat and stress are what caused it. Once it cooled down it was fine until he got over 70mph then it would start shaking pretty bad again. IMHO just pay to get it fixed, my buddy might have just gotten lucky. It could have blown out enough to cause the rearend to sieze and at 160mph it could have turned ugly.

I just had my leaky pinion seal changed under warranty (31500 miles). The diff. is an Auburn unit and according to SLP (who installed it) the fluid and additive should be replaced every 15000 miles. I had thoughts of changing the seal myself, but never found the time. The guys at the dealer were kind enough to install the 3.42s I had in a box in the trunk. What a nice comfortable gear ratio for combined street/highway driving. The SLP Auburn diffs are installed with a cast aluminum housing cover to aide cooling and strengthen the housing and in theory should prevent what happened to NataSS Inc’s friends car.
A little off topic but SLP claims the Auburn diffs are 25% stronger than the Zexel/Torsen units. The Auburn is a clutch type unit while the Zexel is a gear tooth torque sensing diff. My question is how different do these diffs handle. My understanding is that the Auburn will apply power to the wheel with the least amount of traction, while the Zexel applies torque to the wheel with the most traction. Does this make sense? Thanks for any input.

I drove around on my stock rear end for 34K miles with a leaky pinion seal, never even changed the fluid or filled it up....never had a problem. I am now running around with a 3:73 geared 10 bolt with a leaky pinion and I have no plans of messing with it.
If it's not pouring out of the rear, I wouldnt mess with it unless you know how to do it yourself. The problem isn't bad enough to spend 400 bucks. Just keep your fluid changed so it will stay full and you'll be fine..
