No big deal to come out through the top once you get all the accessories off the front of the engine, and remove the radiator. I've pulled the engine out of my car3 or 4 times now, all out the top, and even left the automatic tranny attached to it once and pulled the entire assembly.

4l60E and motor came out just fine, and we even got the th350 and ls1 in from the top just fine. It's easiest to take the hood off. You also need a cherry picker that will reach real far in there. I borrowed one that had and extra hole drilled in it further down the shaft to reach way back int here. It's a tight fit, but it will work. It's all about the angle you get. Make sure you take off the crank pulley first. It gives alot of clearance.

anyone have pics??? I would like to do this myself and save a lot of money... Or at least some instruction. I have a T56, can it come out attached? its a pain to get the top bolts when its on jack stands! its my daily driver so time is of the essence! Also anyone have a write up on ring changes and what is required? basically a whole tear down. Hate to spend 130 bucks on the manual if I can do it for free!

Yep...motor and T56 out from the top. Accesories and radiator removed. A load leveler might make it easier....I just manhandled it out though. Not to tough...just take your time.

Whats the basics to doin that? just unbolt the engine mounts from the chassis or the block? (4 bolts on the chassis or the single bolt on the block), what about the A/c? drain it or take it all off? take the intake manifold and heads off or can I leave them on? any plugs or tricky wires to watch for? Also where you mount the cherry picker to?

just pull the accessories and intake manifold off? where did you attach the chains for the cherry picker? any tricks I should know about with a T56?

All accessories off, intake manifold off. I have always kept the crank pully on, but you gain a little more clearance if you take it off as well.

You can bolt chains to the accessory holes in the front and back of the heads.

look up black ls1 t/a he has a data base on what you need , including the link to raughhammer's pics.

i took my engine from the top, no biggie. leave the condenser in but remove the rad. you also could leave the compressor and the p/s pump attatched ( to the hoses , not the engine) i used a wire and tied them to the swaybar. pully doesn't have to be removed.

to put the engine in with the t56 i would put it in and then install the lower engine mounts after the engine is in ( the ones without the rubber stuff). the tranny/bellhousing won't clear if you don't.

you could make it easier and seperate the tranny before you pull it out, just get a long extention and a swivle socket, and make sure the tranny crossmember is off ( so the tranny could tilt back and down so you get better access to the bolts).

oh and if you have headers , unbolt them bfore the removal , and have them in the engine compartment before you drop the motor in ; trust me , you want to do this!

good luck.
