Small cams vs "big" cams

Small cams vs "big" cams
I'm trying to get back in the scene and no LS1 is right without a new bumpstick. I ran the Comp XER 224/228 581 112+2 two years ago and put down 39X with all bolt ons and 4.10's through a 10 bolt on street tires. My question is I realize cam technology has changed since then and am wondering if one of the 23x - 590-610 cams are the way to go. I constantly replaced the driver side 02 sensor even with running the hotter rear Vette 02's, not sure if that was cam/tune or LT header related or not. I see people claiming 80 rwhp from just a cam and think Hmmmmmm.

I bought quite a bit of stuff from Texas Speed and Thunder. Has anyone read this book yet? http://www.amazon.com/Dyno-Proven-Th...3013141&sr=1-1 Wondering if it's worth buying.

it all depends on what you want to do with it. Stuff like where you want to shift, what rear gear/converter (if its an auto) you want to run, do you want midrange torque or high end power, rumpity or smooth idle, etc. You might want to get a custom cam done for yourself and your goals. I had Patrick G do my custom cam recommendation based on everything I wanted, and I'm having TSP grind it for me. I think I'll be happy

You might make an additional 80 hp from just a cam change, but you are spinning it to the moon to get there, and only looking at peak gains. If you don't mind somewhat peaky power and soft around town throttle response and driveability, then go for it.
I'd say step up for some good quality cylinder heads and select a cam that complements them and your chosen driving style. With heads, the monster cams that are out there can make nearly 500rwhp if properly tweaked. But milder setups can top 440+ rwhp with excellent manners.
