Default Oil cumsumption (leakdown-compression test)

I took my car down and had a leak down and compression test done today and the mechanic said it couldnt be better. All the plugs were oil soaked and all he could tell me that the engine was as good as any 15k miles LS1 could expect to be. By the way this was not a GM dealership I had another reputable shop perform the test.
For those that have not read my other post I have a 2000 SS with 15k miles on it that started using oil like crazy right after the Comp. cam was installed. It uses about 1 qt. every couple hundred miles unless I rag on it then a little more. It smokes bad at wide open throttle.
What I am wandering now is could it be the heads evan thought this is my second set. The first set was changed due to the smoking problem for a low mileage 2001 set. I am wandering if the cam is not right or something else besides the rings are bad.

I would have to guess it would be valve seals or valve guides rathet than rings. Go drive the car around untill it's hot. Pull over and leave the car running. Pull the oil fill cap and look for smoke. Any smoke means you got a little blowby. If the rings are toast it will be obvious. OF COURSE check the pcv system out very well.

Could be valve stem seals... We get that kind of problem in my dealership every so often, i work at a lexus dealership not a chevy one.. but the basic principles apply. Bigger cam might put more stress on the seals.. Or it could be the oil control rings... compression wouldnt be much affected because the oil itelf seals the compression rings... its similar to doing a wet compression test to check if rings are bad...

Hello, my name is Brian and i own a LS1 Smoker!

<img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

I installed a hotcam and have the exact same problems as you.... well i pulled the motor down last weekend, the rings are completely shot, no taper and the oil rings were pitifull, completely collapsed. I'm hoping that was the problem, the oil rings, the valve seals and guides are in great shape, no signs of bad valves or oil in the intake.... all that is left is rings, and after seeing how small the rings really are, i'm surprised more people don't have that problem.

I'll let you know in a about 2 weeks if that corrected my problems <img border="0" title="" alt="[Cool]" src="gr_images/icons/cool.gif" />

FYI, i put the stock cam back in but did not help my condition any <img border="0" title="" alt="[Sad]" src="gr_sad.gif" />

I really hope it is not the rings if not then I will just pull the heads off and get some more. I was hoping it was the valve seals or guides. It didnt start until I put in the cam and the motor only has 15k miles on it.Maybe the cam caused bad valve train geometry and caused excesive load against the valves? I was told this could happen, I did just reuse the stock pushrods.
