Stock LS1 rebuild inquiry...
I am trying to weigh my options and learn some more before I take the first step to rebuild the LS1 in my '98 Trans AM and I have a few questions/issues that I would like clarification or suggestions on.
First of all I would like to rebuild the LS1 engine that is sitting in my car now. The motor will be N/A and never see a power adder not even the spray. Based off this decision I was wondering what the "best bang for the buck build" would be... Forged 347/348 H/C or 383 stroker or 393 all bore or a bigger 402/403/427?
Aside from those three choices wouldn't I have to resleeve the LS1 block to achieve 402 or 403 cubic inches? Which at that point, facing resleeving, wouldn't it be better just to buy an iron LQ9 block and build from there? Because an LQ9 block is basically an LS1 with a 4.00 inch bore, right? and all the accessories would switch over to the LQ9 block from my Trans AM? and besides tapping the hole for the alternator it's a direct swap right?
Wouldn't an LS2 based 402/403 be more work and money switching parts, sensors, and wiring into my '98, just to save some weight of the aluminum LS2 vs. iron LQ4/LQ9?
Sorry for all of the questions I am just trying to learn and clear some things up. Any help and/or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
This car is 99% street car and I am not trying to build a race/track car, I just would like to have a very nice street cruiser with a built motor as the stock block is racking up the miles. I will only go to the track to see what it will do but other than that, all it will see is the streets. This is why I was trying to just rebuild the stock block because I feel the LQ9 based 402/403 or the resleeved LS1 would be overkill and more money and seeing as how some nice proven combinations are closing the gap between the 402/403 big boys and the 383 boys it was just a thought...
