Ive removed many heads at the dealership i work for, and since lexus uses only aluminum heads, i have a little experience... i usually just use a small wire brush and either parts wash or top engine cleaner... That usually works out pretty good...

Brake cleaner and scour pads work great.

Thanks, I was going to try that but I was a little worried about scratching the aluminum. I guess when you think about it head porters polish the chamber. I'll just try to avoid the sealing areas and go after it by hand.

Don't use any metal scraper(putty knife, wire brush...etc.) on any surface that has to seal with a gasket. Use only plastic tools on machined aluminum surfaces.
