Default Stock valve spring installed height

I am in the middle of rebuilding my stock 241 heads and started measuring the installed height of the valve springs. I was expecting something on the order of 1.8 inches, but am finding more on the order of 1.925". Has anyone measured their stock setups that can verify these numbers?

Hey Bob,
This is almost exactly what I got when I measured a set of stock 241's. Here's the measurements I got:

Stock valve's, retainers, and locks - 1.980" w/o the spring seat
Spring seat thickness - ~.050

Installed height w/ spring seat - ~1.930

Stock installed height is ~1.800". If you are using the height micrometer from Comp, Crane, etc., the stock retainers actually sit down inside the mic and are not flush with the top of the height micrometer. Since the height measurement is taken from the top of the mic., you need to subtract this "step" in order to come up at the exact installed height. Usually, this step is ~ 0.150", but will vary depending on the mic. used.

make sure you are measuring with the spring seat in place, and the correct retainer/lock combo you are going to use. 1.790-1.815 is what i find usaually with stock stuff.

Bingo. I was thinking of this while I was driving and it dawned on me. I are an idiot!!!!! I had made a special shim for the smaller diameter beehive retainers to bring them to the correct height for direct reading of the micrometer. Last time I used the tool was for a set of Crane valve springs whose retainer didn't require the special shim so all my measurements are wrong. I am now getting 1.765 so they are correct.
