Annoying tapping sound needs to go away Yes, this annoying noise around the #3 cylinder is driving me nuts. Tired of looking at the SES light, and not being able to pass OBDII emissions testing as the result. Should I take it to the dealership to get checked, or somewhere else? I'm not 100% certain what is causing this, but am guessing Lifter or Pushrod. However, I don't want to pay for expensive stock replacement parts. They're a rip-off I think. Rather go with aftermarket parts, and get a new cam put in as well.

Re: Annoying tapping sound needs to go away do a compression test. remember to take out all the spark plugs to do this. if you have low compression, and if #3 is low, do the oil trick to eliminate bad rings. if this doesn't bring up low compression, take off your valve cover and bring the cylinder to TDC. once this is done, spin the pushrods and see if they are bent and/or loose. see if your valves are loose by giving them 'the wobble test' to eliminate worn valves & valve guides. they should sit firm in the head. if all these things don't find your problem, you probably have the 'sloppy piston syndrome' that seems so common among stock LS1 owners, me included. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Roll Eyes]" src="images/icons/rolleyes.gif" />

Re: Annoying tapping sound needs to go away It doesn't seem to idle roughly, and have not noticed any smoke. But, can hear tapping around the #3 cylinder. It's easiest to hear when vehicle is idling. When I accelerate, just before it shifts I get this rattling sound. On the 3-4 shift, it feels like it hesitates to shift. It'll hold at like 2000 or 2100 RPM's for a second or two, then shift. The code that shows up is, P0327 (Front knock sensor, low output). The rattling sound during acceleration seems to fade after driving it for awhile. But, sounds like **** when car is cool.

Re: Annoying tapping sound needs to go away You are describing what sounds like a rod bearing. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Sad]" src="gr_sad.gif" /> If it is a bearing you will have to rebuild engine. You need to have someone look at it and hear this noise firsthand.

Re: Annoying tapping sound needs to go away I'm gonna take it to the dealership in the morning. I'll have them check it out, and let me know what the deal is. Then i'll know where to go from there. I think I'll go ahead and get the Knock Sensors replaced. Then see what happens, or do what the dealership recommends. Let y'all know ASAP!

Re: Annoying tapping sound needs to go away If you have headers are you sure your AIR tube is sealed well and did you put a restrictor plate on it? Might as well look at the cheap and very easy stuff first...

Re: Annoying tapping sound needs to go away Don't have headers yet. That's what I plan to do after I get my cam installed. I had someone listen to it at the shop earlier. He said it didn't sound like a lifter or pushrod. Suggested I try replacing the knock sensor first, and see what happens. If all else fails, I won't lose much. The sensors aren't very expensive, and the dealership doesn't want to terribly much for the labor. Remains to be seen!

Re: Annoying tapping sound needs to go away i would say bent pushrods. I broke 3 and bent 4 my car was lacking some power. DO it now before you collapse a lifter like I did and ruin the head.

Re: Annoying tapping sound needs to go away First of all the guy that listened to it, wasn't even a mechanic. Just some car buff that works at the shop. He said, he thought it might be a spring. But, I'm doubting that's what it is. Several other people I've talked to, say it sounds like it might be a bent pushrod or collapsed lifter. I haven't had anyone else listen to it yet. While it's in idle, you can hear it about 8 feet away from the car. The noise can best be heard around the #3 cylinder, as I mentioned before.
