Remove water pump with head swap?
Do I have to remove the water pump for a head swap if I am removing the freeze/drain plugs on the block to drain the fluid?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: Remove water pump with head swap?
Thanks to your write up on your web site I know that the two drain plugs don't need to be removed. However, based again on your write up, I want to avoid having to clean all the coolant from the head bolts holes and cylinders. I thought that would be more time consuming than removing the starter and the two drain plugs. I happen to be doing a clutch swap so getting the starter out was easy.
Since my clutch is still not here I think my heads may come in at the same time so I am doing both at the same time.

Water pump stays on.
It really takes no time at all to remove the starter ( 2 bolts ) and the alternator ( 3bolts). Compressed air works real well for blowing out the holes, then go back and check for debris/coolant. I went back in every hole with cotton swaps just to make sure.

The head bolts will need to be cleaned out regardless. The holes are blind and do not drain into the water jacket. Easiest way to clean out the holes is to take 1/2 sheet of paper towel and wrap it around a push rod. Ram them down the holes and the paper towel will wick the water out. Probably takes about 2 to 4 cleanings. I've got pictures of that method on my head cam install off my website.
Good luck!
