Default Engine decisions...Stroked, bored, forged or heads cam??

I need to do some engine work and I can't make up my mind. I've been reading goods and bads about strokers and all bores. I thought about doing a forged bottom end but if I do that it may as well be a stroker kit. Originally I was just gonna do stage 2 heads with a cam. If I do a stroker it would also include stage 3 heads with a cam. If I do a stroker or all bore it would be done by a local engine builder....not one of the 'big names' mainly because of cost. Are the strokers and all bores going to be that much better then a good stage 2 heads/cam setup? Are they worth the extra money? I would also like to keep my juice on top of whatever setup I decide to get.

I would do a forged 346ci if you plan on spraying the car. I would use JE pistons ( $600 ), Lunati rods ( $700 ), stock crank, ARP rod bolts and head studs, upgraded timing chain and ported oil pump. Top that off with some GTP heads and a Thunder cam and should be set. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" /> You could probably get away with stock rods if you wanted and just upgrade the rod bolts.

Don't forget an adequate fuel system to support your HP level.

Any amount of money spent on a stroker will be alot & I would feel better with some one who's experenced w/stroked LS1's . How much more can it be? I'd just think of it as insurance. my .02

No point (I don't think at least...) doing a stroker (forged too) unless you plan on doing heads&cam. Stage 2 is probably all you need for up to a 383 assuming you go stroke and not bore. Bigger bores would benefit from the Stage 3 setup.

Jsears: Would you do the regular 5.7 heads or the 4.8's like you currently have? How would they be with the nitrous? Also how big of shot would I be able to run with the new bottom end?

ttt
Interesting topic. What are ALL the items needed to stroke an LS1? I always thought a crankshaft was necessary. Have to replace the block?
I don't know, never looked into it before.
