LS6 block in 01/02 F-Bods?
There was a debate on another board about A) What differences exsisted between the 00 and 01 F-Body, which sparked B) What is the difference between the LS1 and LS6?
Can you guys help me answer these questions?
Someone also made the suggestion that the 01/02 F-bodies(and LS1 Vettes I suppose) come with LS6 blocks! Is this true?
Thanks for the info guys,
Mike

The difference between the LS1 and LS6 blocks is that the LS6 has window slits cut into the base of the cylinder, for better bay to bay breathing, which helps reduce windage losses in the motor.
Also the LS6 block is a somewhat stronger made block.
The LS6 block began being used in late 2001 C5 production (I dont if it was used in f-body production or when).
Here is a pic of the window in the LS6 Block:

And here is a pic (litmus test) to tell if your "LS1" uses the LS6 block. Look at the extension of the block deck on the right (passenger) side just forward of the head (where older small block motors had the serial number stamped). You will see a rough indentation toward the center of the block and a flat machined section toward the side of the car. On the LS1 the machined section is flat and on the LS6 the machined section has a slight machined cutout.

my 01 SOM as the same cutout. I read that all 01-02 LS1's had the LS6 block. I dont see whay GM would tool 2 different blocks for the y-body f-body plants. but then again they put on different heads. who knows. LS6 baby :-)

actually, as far as strnegth of block, most resleeving vendors want to do it with a 99-00 LS1 block, since they have better sleeve support. The LS6 blocks in '02 are recommended for road racing with their better oil passages and a few minor bennies, if you dont resleeve it large.
Remember folks, the LS-6 block doesnt mean LS-6 pistons, LS6 PCV, or LS6 heads.
