Default Cam Bearings Replacement?

Well I get my Comp Cams cam 224/228 on Monday and 16 extendable pen magnets to hold the lifters up (I didn't want to spend $386.98 for a Cam Install Tool). I was talking with a friend and he recommended that I also replace the cam bearings while I'm at it. I'm pretty new to the whole cam install thing and I'm doing it off the instructions I printed from ls1howto.com and they seem pretty legitimate. Would anyone else recommend replacing the cam bearings? Grant it my 99 Trans Am WS6 I'm putting it in has 140k miles on the engine. Any suggestions?

Thanks

I wouldn't replace them, if they aren't rough, unless you are having problems with the engine and are going to remove and rebuild it. Just look at them and if they are smooth, leave them alone.

Unless the motor is giving you trouble already, and you have experience replacing cam bearings, I'd probably avoid changing them.

Just my $0.02...

if it ain't broke, don't fix it. 99% of people doing cam swaps don't repalce the bearings. Also, I think most people including myself would prefer using a metal dowel from home depot as apposed to magnets.

We were doing a cam swap on my buddies T/A, and he chose to use pen magnets, and while pulling them off the lifters, and magnet decided to stay attached to the lifter. It took us four hours to get the little magnet off the lifter.

This isn't as trivial as it sounds. You cant replace cam bearings with the motor assembled and in the car thats why no one replaces them when they do a cam swap.
