Ca emission legal set-up help needed
Alright, i have a '98 formula M6. I have a direct flow lid, ported and descreened MAF, Hooker LT's (and ORP, going to have a custom y pipe made for cats soon), !CAGS, and a cut-out.
I will be getting 4.10's in a week or 2, then some DR's.
After that i am going to get a cam, and i was looking at the TR220 114LSA. What i've heard is anything larger (ie.TR224) that i would have to really get everything perfect to pass the sniffer. Is the TR220 114 a cam i should be going with?
What else should i get to make it all work together. Like said, i plan on putting cats in a custom Y-pipe to pass sniffer (i know i won't pass visual, but i can get past that), i am going to buy a full cat-back b/c the cut-out is loud with the LT's as it is, and then i want to get a 5.0 shifter...after all that i assume i'll need a new clutch too <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" /> .
I was thinking a pulley, but what benefit is there, and how much hp or 1/4 wise is it worth?
I'll get dyno tuned after i get the gears, cam, and cat-back on there to get it all working together.
One other thing, will getting a LS6 manifold help me that much? If i get it, i'll have to get rid of the EGR, and i'll have to have that programmed into the PCM. Will this make it smog illegal in CA, or will it make it so its going to be harder to pass the sniffer? Basically i want to know: will adding a LS6 intake manifold help me that much, and will it affect my ability to pass emisions?
Thanks for all the help, i just want to get my set-up working together. I can't wait till i have all of this stuff done, its gonna fly <img border="0" alt="[Fluffy]" title="" src="graemlins/fluffy.gif" /> .

The 220/220 114 cam will easily pass emmissions and not leave you in panic every year when your notice comes up. I'd get it and sleep well at night. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />
The LS6 intake is a good mod with cam & headers. SLP and others offer an intake modified for the EGR if you wish to keep your car legal.
I'd get the pulley and a ported TB to complete your set-up to.

My SS that I had had the TR 224 Cam on the 114lsa and passed the sniffer no problem. Key to passing is
1.) make sure your not running pig rich
2.) drive the car ALOT be4 smog time. This heats up the motor and helps it burn much cleaner.
My car also had FLP's and passed the emissions test with the FLP cat converters.
later <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

Re: Ca emission legal set-up help needed
I just remembered there are LS6 manifolds that are EGR compatable, so i guess i'll do that. I guess i'll do the ported TB, but i never thought that was a big deal, i think i'd do it last.
SSboy - What state do you live in, CA? What i plan on doing is just getting random tech cats welded into a custom y-pipe with the Hooker LT's, then i'll have the cam.
The thing is, there isn't enough gain, that i've seen, between the 224 and the 220 so warrant going for the 224. What i'd like to do is get the 224 112LSA, but i doubt i would pass with the 112LSA. I think i'd rather go with the 220, miss the 5hp or something for the security.
Also, i read a few emissions tricks, other than the normal "have your car running for a while to make sure your cats are all nice and toasty" and "make sure to not run rich". I've also heard to run some alcohol (small amount mixed in with the gas) b/c it will burn cleaner, but i dunno about that one.

I do live in California. My mods on the car were..flp's, TR Cam, LS6 Intake(with no EGR), and i even had a 160 degree thermostat with the fans turned on earlier. I didn't even have the EGR turned on when i went to go get smogged.
stay away from the 112lsa as thats going to be cutting it much more close. I just couldn't believe how clean that 224 cam burned. I went with the 224 primarily for the fact that it had a lil more lope to it. <img border="0" alt="[devil]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_devil.gif" />
as far as smogging goes in California, there is always "someone" who can overlook the visual.
So i would not worry about putting on headers, aftermarket cats, ls6manifold(w out egr), etc...
its just the sniffer that you have to worry about.
good luck with your decision...can't go wrong with either cams <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

Re: Ca emission legal set-up help needed
Well, i already have the Hookers in there, and i'm running the ORP right now. I will obviously have to get cats to pass the sniffer, so i may as well get it sooner rather than later.
About the EGR, don't they just look for a code, and if you aren't throwing a code for it your fine (being that the '01 and up have no EGR)? Couldn't i just get the EGR basically deleted from the PCM with LS1 edit and have no problems?
I really want a lopey cam, i love the sound. If you really think i shouldn't have trouble passing with the TR224 i think i'll go with that. The guy at thunder said he's had people pass CA smog with the 224, he didn't really recommend either more than the other, just said that if i'm worried about smog the 220 is safer (of course it is).
I know i can find a place that will overlook visual without much trouble, as long as i pass the sniffer i'll be happy.
Thanks for the advice, and anything else you can add will be a great help as well. Thanks.
