I have been debating doing this for some time and have heard both sides of the pro's and con's. So I am going to ask you all what your experiences are with a snapped chain or "bad" pumps? I would prefer to spend the money on go-fast(er) mods but also want some "piece-of-mind".
TIA
TIA

I feel much better after swaping out the timming chain a pump. I used the slp chain and are pump. I compared the stock chain to the slp one. The stock chain is junk. The chain only had 8,000 miles on it and it seemed to have alot of slack in it.

I understand the piece of mind from the swap..but is it "really" necessary? There are some H/C cars out there with some miles that are holding up fine.....I talked with David at TR and he indicated they rarely did the swap on non-solid roller setups. How many out there have had these problems? Just trying to justify the need for added "insurance".

The oil pump should be swapped regardless IMO. Too many documented cases of failures. Get a brand new OEM pump, or get an aftermarket blueprinted one. Either one should be fine.
As for timing chains, thats more debatable. Very rarely does one fail, and when they do fail, it could have been for other reasons like P/V contact.
BTW, its "peace of mind" not "piece of mind", unless you actually want a chunk of brain.

For my winter buildup i'm getting a new timing chain (the one that is in the GP/Dealer section) and an ARE oil pump... it's only 250 or so total and I'd rather be safe than sorry... I figure i'm dumping thousands into exhaust, heads, cam, etc.... so why not do the oil pump and timing chain.
PSJ broke a timing chain a while back I think, and I believe on this board or ther other board I've read of cases of stock timing chains snapping

It's pretty rare, but if it is your oil pump that takes a crap it will really suck!!!
There doesn't seem to be any guarantee with the stock oil pump at least that if yours ran fine for 10,000 miles you're fine - many have failed after this.
I try not to think too much about this because the whole topic makes my ill , LOL Why couldn't GM have f*cked up the glove box latch or something instead of the oil pump?

Thanks guys for the input! If the pump is the real concern, then obviously do the chain at the same time. My current pump holds excellent pressure though. My understanding though is that they can go out without any sign of failure. I wish ATap actually logged oil pressure.....
