Default Yet another Spark Plug hole thread question

The #2 plug blew out of the head today on the way to work. After getting it to a shop along the way to borrow a plug wrench, I discovered that the threads in the head are almost gone. The plug threads in easily, but will not tighten down and just blows right back out again when I start the car.

I searched but did not find an a problem similar to mine.

I guess I need to put a thread insert into the hole. Is this something that I can do with the head on the car? Luckily its #2 so I can get to it fairly easy. I just have not done this before.

Any suggestions or hints? I really don't want to have to take it to a shop to get this done.

Mark

to do it the right way and not have the engie ingest the metal that will be left behind after the tapping, drilling ect you will need to pull the head.

while you are there, you need to check all other threaded holes in the heads to make sure they wont do the same.

and for gods sake dont over tighten the sparkplugs when you reinstall em...

These are a pain to fix. Option #1 pull head or Option #2 heli-coil it. To do this you got to get a heli-coil kit 14mm, use supplied tap with tons of grease on it to catch metal shavings. Cut new threads & install new heli-coil. I use compressed air & blow cylinder out + I check it with a boriscope(Mini camera) & make sure cylinder is clear. This is the best way on car, but requires the tools & time. + if you can't get a clear shot at the plug hole, manifold/header has to come off. Of course option # 1 is the proper method for repair & option #2 is the ghetto fix.
