there was no shavings on the oil plug and i cut open the oil filter and there was no shavings in that either does there always have to be shavings to indicate a spun rod bearing?

Let's assume for the moment that it's not a spun bearing. What have you done to the engine that you wanted it tuned. Give us some info on the car, mods, and the nature of the tap - heavy thump, light tap, does it go with RPM or at 1/2 RPM

Im in the same boat, i emptied the oil in my catch can today and it it looked like a cloudy brown and reaked of gass. So i changed my oil and it smelled like gass but still had an oil consistency. I too have developed a tap over the past few weeks that i thought was an exhaust leak. Here in the next couple weeks im going to have new headers and a td's built, air deleated. If the tick is still there my next step is to pull the heads, get better heads, lifters, pushrods, cam, and check my rings because im still untunned so maybe the rings are washed. What do you all think?

it is a ls2 with ls6 heads ported and polished with 205 160 valves milled 20 thousanths with a 238 242 comp cam on a 113 lsa with 3 degrees advance.it was fine driving it there and when i left then when i got on it and took to about 6500 rpms and as soon as i got home i started to here the tapping.it is a loud tapping that gets a little quiter when i rev it up but you can still hear it.

Not true. One bearing is hard to tell on the oil pressure gauge. haah

This makes no sense...The dash guages shows oil PSI, not oil level. The guages may not change becuase your still pumping oil through your motor. Anything in this world takes the path of least resistance and if you had spun a bearing oil will not be pumping into to cavity in the bearings...it will pump out of the one the doesn't have a bearing their...thus, low oil PSI

This might be me...but those seem like some pretty tight ptv tolerances. Did you flycut at all?

I'm just speaking from personal experience, but I haven't witnessed a spun bearing without a noticeable drop in pressure. Now, I watch my oil pressure like a hawk, so I know when it's down even a couple psi. So, this is all subjective. I'm sure there are plenty of instances where people don't notice a small drop like that, but the sheer physics of it show that it will produce a drop.

the pistons are flycut 0.80.is there a certain noise that a spun bearing makes?

Heres a clip of a car with a spun bearing:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3sdg_0ksjs

Pretty noticable, but just because you car doesn't sound like this doesn't mean its not a spun bearing...although if it is the other bearings wont be getting lubed like they should and they may fail too...in which case you would definatly see low oil PSI

A spun bearing doesnt mean it is going to have low oil pressure, like others have mentioned. Having said that, if you do have low oil pressure, this is usually the time a bearing would spin.

Taking it to 6600 with the modifications that you have should not have damaged anything as long as it was not there for an extended period of time. Could it be possible that it has been there and you just now have noticed it after revving the motor like that?

Well, you at least need to pull the valve covers and rocker arms. I would suggest doing that and then reporting back. It won't take long.

Does anyone know a way to test if a lifter is good or not while it's out?
