Could be a lifter, bent pushrod, a rocker bolt could have backed out.... Time to open up the valve covers and check it all out. If everything looks kosher, then you'd have to pull the heads to check the lifters.

Did you check your oil level? If it's low......it could be a spun rod bearing.

If his oil pressure is good, it won't be a spun bearing.

Wrong ... oil pressure doesn't=oil capacity/volume.

Does the noise sound like valvetrain (upper/half speed) or bottom end? You can place a stethoscope or long screwdriver on the valve cover and listen for the area that is loudest for valvetrain. It may be counting a few missfires on suspect cylinder too (may not be enough to set code). You could have it scanned.

it had everything to do with yours, he's saying it could still be a spun bearing with good oil pressure.

Actually, if you look at the post right above mine, that's what he's referring to. I have no idea how he could be referring to my post(s). If you have any clue as to how the oil propagates through the engine you would know that a spun bearing opens up a lot of clearance between it and the crank or cam, whichever one it is. More clearance equals less pressure in the system. This is a tell-tale sign of a spun bearing.

dude, he quoted you. twice. maybe you disagree about the oil pressure thing. but i am pretty sure he is saying that you can have low oil (which could cause a spun bearing) and still have good pressure

I don't think you get what I'm saying here... I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt, albeit a far stretch from reality. Nonetheless, low oil does not mean low pressure. I'm not sure who said it did or why he thinks that's what was inferred. I don't think anyone knowledgeable would argue that a spun bearing doesn't give a noticeable loss in pressure, most of the time an unquestionably severe drop. Maybe what's up for debate is what "good" and "low" oil pressure is... I can only speculate until he responds.

Damn all this for me?

A friend of mine spun a bearing and there was no change in oil pressure (that we saw). Had a tick that we were sure was valvetrain noise. Finally tore down the engine and saw what the cause was.....two bearings that looked pretty bad and another that was worn. This "tick" started after a WOT run down 1 quart of oil.

I'm not going to argue the point. There are too many experts on here for that. All I'm saying is what I saw and heard on his engine.

Low oil level doesnt affect pressure unless it gets low enough to cavitate the pump. A spun rod bearing may not show much drop in oil pressure, ive seen it time and time again.

would the car run like crap after a spun rod bearing and would there be metal shavings in the oil or the filter.

There is no definitive answer for that. You could have those things or not. It's kind of a crap shoot at times.

If there is a spun bearing, more than likely there will be copper color shaving in the oil filter cut it in half and look at the element in the filter. I have definately seen on more than one occasion a spun bearing not affecting the oil pressure.
