Default Milling 5.7 heads....

Going to have a local racing machine shop mill my heads. I live in AZ and the gas out here is 91. I don't "think" I want to go higher than 11:1 compression. How much "CAN" I mill the heads before the intake would not mate to the heads? What length pushrods do I need if I mill 0.010, 0.030, or 0.050?

milling .035" will bring the CR to approx 10.7 to 1

Thats all I would take off.

You will need 7.35" pushrods (they are .050" shorter than stock) Pushrods come in 50 thousand incriments from Comp Cams.

If you are going to use an aftermarket cam, they usually will have a smaller base circle than your stock cam. So, with a combo of milled heads and aftermarket cam, you could more than likely use stock 7.40" rods.

A guy measured a TR-224 cam and it had a base circle (cam centerline to lobe heal) about .030" smaller than stock. That in itself would require a .030" [longer] rod.

With .030" milled off the heads, that in itself would require a .030" [shorter pushrod]

As you can see, the combo of the two would then require a stock length pushrod in order to keep your lifter preload very very close to what it was when stock.

Hope this helps....

yep...thanks guy......I also got smart and just CALLED Thunder Racing (amazing what you can do when you actually use your brain ) and asked them all this. You are all correct.

The TR cam is 0.030 smaller so if used with 0.030 milled heads, you just use the factory length pushrods (7.400).

Thanks again guys
