There is no machining required to use a C5-R block as a wet sump. The block is the same as a ls1/ls6 block except for the sleeves, head and main studs. <img border="0" alt="[Camaro]" title="" src="graemlins/camaro.gif" />

I don't know of any machining that they would have to do. The only difference in a wet or dry sump for an ls-1 is the oil pump, oil pan,and dry sump tank. The oil passages for the C5-R block are the same as a ls-1 ls-6.

Why not just try calling Katech? They are the ones that make the block, and would probably know best.

G2 LS1: lets just say that I have been around the industry for a while and I have gained my knowledge from several reputible shops. I guess the bottom line is that you should call katech and just ask them what they do to machine an C5-R
to fit a wet sump oiling system.

well LS1Joe - you are wrong. the suspect motor had no oil pressure on saturday. today a "soft plug" was drilled out and all was fine. it makes sence to me that a race block would come set up for a dry sump, and if you wanted to run wet, drill out a plug. i think there is a plug in the hole where the wet sump oil pump pumps oil into the block (just to the right of the crank snout behind the timming cover). there is also a threaded hole on the drivers side of the block (faces towards the wheel) that is plugged that accesses the oil gallies. makes sence to me that that's where the dry sump pump is plumbed in (side of the block) and that the passage in the block behind the timming cover needs to be plugged (that way from GM) so oil doesnt run out the hole where the wet sump pump would reside, if it was a wet sump setup.
anyone else agree?
and have you ever called Kateck? well i have, and they did not want to help (not C5R related).

Re: machining of the C5-R block for wet sump - what needs to be done?
Let me shed some light on this for you guy's. They do make two C5R race cylinder cases. The wet sump is the one that most of you have or have seen. It is drilled with all of the oil passages that a production block has. There is also a dry sump only race block that is used in the C5R race cars. This block is not drilled for the standard oil passages. It does not have the main oil galley hole in it that runs front to back like on the production block. As for now GM only sells this block to the C5R race program. Hope this clears things up for you guy's.

I have the Swartz machining badge on the rear of my C5R block and it wasn't bought through Katech.

All of the blocks for GM racing are done at Schwartz MAchine in Detroit. So that is why you have their badge on your block. The only block that you have to get through Katech is the "dry sump only" block. The wet sump blocks, any GM dealer in the country can get for you.

Chris
