Default Ok.... so explain head studs...

I know what a stud is... but I'm not quite sure how head studs would look/work... anyone have any pics of there block w/head studs on it?

Are they just threaded rod that goes right through the head and a nut ontop to torque down? Someone asked in aonther thread but i'll ask here... does the motor need to come out to pull the heads of a studded car?

You are correct, they are just a double-threaded stud that threads into the block, passes thru the heads, and come with a 12-point nut and a washer.

They can be reused, that is nice. Stock head bolts cannot. They are also easier to torque down in sequence, not any of that angle crap like stock head bolts.

Yes, the heads can be removed with the engine in the car, did so myself about 3 weeks ago with no clearance issues.

I don't know if he has any more left, but a guy in the Forced Induction section had contacted ARP about making some custom Head studs for LS1/LS6 that are a bit stronger than the ones they currently have. I think the tensile strength (spelling?) on the regular studs ARP sells is 190,000 psi, and the custom ones are 220,000 psi. You can give him a call or send him an email to see if he has any sets left. The thread in the FI section is here:
Custom ARP head studs

Basically, he got ARP to make a bunch and then the people who were supposed to buy them backed out, so he had a bunch of extras he was looking to sell off. I think the price is $365 for the whole set shipped, if he still has some.

...in case you're interested....

So do these just replace the stock head bolts without any modifications? I'd much rather use studs than the bolts that you have to twist the crap out of.

Yep, direct replacement. I haven't gotten mine yet, but I believe the set comes with 30 studs, washers and 12 point nuts. Everything you need to do the replacement. And, as said above, you don't have to replace studs like you do the stock head bolts.

I don't plan on removing my heads again, at least not for a while, but if I do, I won't have to buy new head bolts.

What is the advantage of the 12 pt nut vs the hex nut? The 12 pt nut is alittle more expensive too, but I don't even have any 12 pt tools. Anyone have a picture of what the 12 pt nut looks like?

ARP makes the head studs. Most of our engine-building sponsors sell them. If you don't see them on a vendor's site, just give them a call.
