Is dealer being truthful about Tech Service?
https://ls1tech.com/ubb/ultimatebb.p...=006681#000001
Those of you that have had this done, can you tell the procedure the dealer went through to have this done?
I have reason to believe our dealership is not being completely honest with us. The car has been using a lot of oil for a while now. The dealer had us do an oil consumption test several months ago, with the most resent results showing a quart of oil for every 500 miles.
We took it into the dealership last Thursday to see if we needed to have the seals replaced that are mentioned in the Tech Service Bulletin. They said GM would not accept the oil consumption test that we had already done because we weren’t using their oil; we had Redline oil in it with Mobil 1 filter. So we had to have them change the oil (our expense) and put in their oil and filter and start the test over. They put blue paint all around the oil filter and plug, I guess so that if anyone messed with it they would know. Crazy, like we want to have trouble!
They also said that GM says the job can be done (replacing the seals) in 14 hours so that’s all they will pay, but the dealership said it would take them a week to do the job????? If this is true I am sure the dealership will not want to do it. Does anyone know how long it should take to do this?
Is our chain being pulled here? Any help or info is appreciated, Becky
One thing to reference is if they have done a LS1 re-ring job in the past, or if they are familiar with the Gen III engines (I've had dealer training in the LS1 engines FWIW ). Most dealers just like to replace engines because thats all they know how to do. Of coarse it pays less from GM to replace than rebuild.
No it won't take a week to do the whole job. You won't have your car for a week, but they probably won't be working on it that WHOLE time. On the other hand you can't drop it at 8am and expect them to be done at 12 midnight that same day - 14 hours later. Marking the oil filter and drain plug is common, even for regular oil changes at other places.

I wasn't really worried about how long it takes to do the job right, but, is the dealer is telling the truth? How long does it take to replace the 2 seals and how many hours will GM pay for?
Thanks, Becky
Oh yes, why do they paint the filters?

All the more reason to change the oil yourself
On marking the drain plug and filter, they call it a calibrated oil consumption test. Meaning that the dealer knows exactly how much oil was put in, and that its "tamperproof". When its 1 quart low take it back to them to record the amount that it takes to top it off, and the mileage. I would also keep track of your driving habits, like city driving or mostly highway. It will show them that you are concerned about the problem and want to help out in what you can.
