Leave stock gears,add new chain?

I read about a few people breaking stock timing chains.Can we just get an aftermarket chain and leave the stock gears(mainly lower) there? Yes I'm lazy <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />
