Default Discussion on advancing and retarding cams..

I did a search on this and it was very vague.. I am very curious on how this really affects the powerband.. Does anyone have any b4 and after dyno's of advancing cams? For example, my cam peaks now at 6400rpm. If I advance it 4 degrees will my peak drop to 6k rpm or it is basically a wait and see..? If I retard it would my peak go over 7krpm? I was told by advancing the cam you gain low end tq and it makes for a better street car, but tq increases horsepower I thought as well. Any comments would be helpful. I think this could help a lot people when making cam choices..

IMO, advancing and retarding degrees differentiate with cams. Advancing one cam 2 degrees, may bring torque down 200 rpm, while advancing another cam 2 degrees may only drop torque 100 rpm. If you retard your cam 4 degrees, assuming it was ground with 4 degrees advance, you should be well over a 7000 rpm peak. It is true that while advancing your cam, you will pick up low end torque, which is beneficial on the street. Max torque will not increase, but rather will peak sooner, say at 3400 rpm versus 4000 rpm. On the other hand, you may lose a little peak horsepower, which is expected. Horsepower is a function of torque and rpm. HP = (Tq X rpm) /5252. Just plug in the numbers, and you will have answered your question. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />
