How did you fix it, did you end up replacing the starter?

^^ It could also be exactly that also, a very easy fix!^^

Pushrods are a weak point in the valve train, yet your chr-mo's might be just beefy enough!

Maybe a pushrod...but kinda sounds like a blown header gasket. Have you checked your header bolts to see if they havent worked loose? I would check them, then take them loose and see that you dont have a blown header gasket. Then start checking the valve train if that doesnt fix it.

I've checked the header gaskets & bolts. I'm running Percy's dead soft aluminums.

If you cant feel air leaking around the exhaust gaskets then its all good, percys gaskets are pretty good stuff.
You should try and narrow the noise down to a certain cylinder, try killing cylinders until the noise goes away.(or less audible)
Diagnosing a noise is hard and takes some investigative measures. Trying to diagnose from my spot is even harder!! Good Luck!

My car makes a noise similar to that the engine is cold, but it only does it when rpm's are just beneath 2k and is will only do it for a couple of seconds. It also has lifter tick on cold start-up.

My car also has a similar noise, it's about the same volume in the same areas at idle, and does increase with rpms, and becomes nearly inaudible at anything over 2k or so, and is most noticeable around 1200rpms I'd guess.

It's been like this since 11/06 for me, one day I hope to find the answer.

My noise turned out to be a bad lifter. It looks like my 918 went bad on this valve, and it allowed the lifter to 'hop' on the lobe. The lifter won't pull out from the top, so I'm going to slide it out the bottom when I swap cams tomorrow. The TR224 cam in it now is pretty chewed up.
