Default Help me ID this noise.. (video inside)

Car has a TR224 cam, FLP Longtubes, no cats, comp 918s, ti retainers

I have had a weird 'chirp' for a while. It would still be there even if all the belts are off. It would come & go..

I changed my clutch out a few weeks back, and like two days later, this really loud ticking developed. The car wasn't over revved or anything.

Today I:

changed the oil, cut open filter, no metal shavings... ran old oil against magnet, nothing stuck.

took off valve covers, inspected springs & rockers.. nothing broken. I loosened & retorqued all rockers to 22lb/ft

Replaced header gaskets with percy's dead soft aluminum gaskets.

Checked all exhaust flanges, tightened, etc. (FLPs like to leak)

It's still doing it.. Is it the sound of a bad lifter or a spun bearing or something? Oil pressure is fine..

I have the exact same noise comming from the drivers side on the bottom. I dont know what mine is either but it drives me crazy. I think im going to try a different kind of oil to see if it goes away. Good luck i will be monitoring this thread closely.

I wish I could help more but it kinda sounds like the lifters or a push rod.

well it messed up my $400 cam and i am now ordering a bigger $400 cam , but i think it hurt my cam from driving it like that unless the lobe was going bad and made the lifter go bad too

Whats all needed to swap lifters?

I heard the head bolts are torque to yield or whatever, so I assume those must get replaced?

How much doe OE replacements run? I'm on a tight budget right now.. Any way to test the lifters before I pull the heads?

BUUT don't take my word for it and start ordering stuff but the only way to really find out is to tear it down before it gets worse and destroys your motor

i took my valve covers off three time before i decided to pull the heads and it wasn't until then i couldn't see my problem

Your push rods could be bent also. Mine had a similar sound from the passenger side- just all of a sudden, it seemed like. I pulled off the V/C and loosened a few rocker arms, pulled out a few rods and there it was! I was amazing that the car even ran! I then pulled both valve covers and revealed several mis-shapen and bent push rods. They were accually rubbing out or wollering out their guide holes in the head...
No more noise! This happened at about 171K on my 98.
Hope this helps

It would take alot for a hardened pushrod to bend... something else would go first.....

Sometimes the starter solonoid doesnt retract all the way and the gear in the starter hangs up with the flexplate or flywheel and makes a noise like what is heard in the video
