Default burning oil

my 01 ws6 6speed is burning about a quart of mobile 1 every 600 miles. At WOT, the smoke billows out the pipes and on decel. The tips of the pipes are caked with black soot. The dealer says the car is running within specs. This problem started after MAC medium length headers were installed, high flow cats(gutted) and a flowmaster 2 chamber muffler. What gives?
In addition to this oil problem, my car averages about 10 mpg, under normal conditions. The dealer says the o2 sensors being bypassed is the cause for poor mileasge. Any suggestion?

I'm having the same problem with smoke and oil blow-by. It started after the header and cam install. Never burned oil before the installs. Hope someone finds a cure soon or I'm gonna sell this beast and buy that 99 Cobra Convertible with only 410 miles on it that my neighbor has. I love my horsepower but I'd give it up for a nice car without smoke/oil problems

This burning lots of oil just after a header only change has to make the history books.

Only in LS1 Land could a header change do something like this.

Oh well, Some seem to burn massive quantities of oil after a cam only change too. Some smart guy [may] be able to explain that one away, but the "header change oil burner" example has NO explanation whatsoever!

I think GM should have placed a BIG placard in the engine compartment, to read:
______________________________________________

* ATTENTION *

This vehicle is equipped with a Gen III LS1 engine. It will [not] respond as you may expect from basic engine performance modifications. Any attempt to modify, change or alter this engines camshaft or exhaust manifolds [may] result in permanent damage to engine's piston rings and [will] result in excessive oil consumption.

I have headers on both of my 01's and I too was getting alot of smoke on decel after WOT and also was using a qrt about every 750 miles or so. My culprit on both cars was the pcv system. I have installed a greedy catch can inline on both and have no more oil consumption. Check you pcv line and if its soaked with oil, buy the greedy and install it. It was the answer in my case(both).

Hmm...

NO smoke at all here.

Runs like a raped ape too

Maybe the problem lies with the installer

Did you use your stock gaskets?

I just pulled my intake and it had oil in it. it probably coming from the pcv. what about loosing the pcv and putting on a filter. burning more oil with a cam change probably has to do with vaccum and the headers have that bypass pipe that pulls more than stock exaust doe's just a thought

I still say pcv system is inadequate for lack of baffling/seperation of vapors and oil.Once intake consumes enough oil, rings gum up and blowby is a result. Blowby also severely aggravates oil consumption making matters worse. Pcv mods like oil filter/ seperator and top engine clean should repair oil consumption problem and keep it from coming back. Northstar Cadillac engine has similar problem, which is why i have personal experience with finding a solution.
