Default I need some general knowledge on H/C/I

Can anyone give me any good links to learn the general info on these items. I see alot of you posting numbers and so forth, and I am trying to find a good way to learn all of this info without asking a million questions.

Thanks

Well Bass, I've made several mistakes along the way to my heads & cam package. I'll share a few pointers.

Know what you want to do with the car. My goals were simple:

1) Pass OBD-II scans
2) 400+rwhp
3) Car be capable of making a high 11 second 1/4 pass
4) Good drivability after heads & cam

Next, decide are you going to do the install yourself or pay someone. This will affect the direction of package more than anything else.

If your doing the install read up on the current hot set ups and pick what's best for your needs.

If your less certain and working with someone or a shop, find someone you can TRUST to tell you the truth. Ask around and make sure the shop/person has an excellent rep. This is the only thing I really did right with my heads & cam package. My installer has caught several big problems I honestly would have missed. If I'd done the install myself I would have had the following problems.

1) Rep at Comp Cams told me an 224 XE-R lobe has a max lift of .568, this is not true the less aggresive XE cam lobe has .568 lift for the 224 duration cam. If I'd listed to Comp, I would have ordered an XE cam thinking it was an XE-R. There was no misunderstanding on my part as the grind numbers Comp gave me were for an XE cam. I asked at least three times this is for an XE-R right? Comp said yes each time! Using an XE instead of an XE-R would have cost my car power. I wanted a cam on a 113 LSA. I was told this wasn't possible by the Comp Cams rep. He said they didn't do 113 LSA cams. Jesse at SRP has good contacts at Comp and got the desired 224/224 XE-R w/.581 lift on a 113 LSA I wanted. Comp will pretty much give someone with contacts in the racing world whatever they ask for but they won't necessary bother doing that for the guy on the street like me.

2) Hooker headers needed some touch up. Flanges weren't flat. Several welds needed clean up. O2 bung needed to be drilled out & tapped because it was so misaligned an O2 wouldn't screw in it. Hooker missed 1/4 spot and didn't weld it. Compressed air easily blew thru this spot. Header had to welded to fix leaks. I would have missed everying but the O2 problem and had lot's of header issues.

3) I bought an "LS6" intake from a private party. Didn't have an EGR and it "looked" right. This intake turned out to be a LS1 Corvette intake. While I'm pissed at being ripped off, the bottom line is I didn't know as much as I thought I did. I'm so happy, Jesse of SRP Racing caught this problem. The wrong intake would have cost my car 15-20rwhp.

4) I wasn't sure what cam to get. SRP gave me good advice on this based on testing my heads.

Talk with the person your working with and select a package. I picked my stuff out pretty much on my own before talking with Jesse. My heads are very good but if I'd have done this a little differently I could have had a set of heads with the intake port refined for best flow with my LS6 intake, polished chambers, bronze guides, enhanced exhaust ports, titanium retainers and the list goes on. I probably gave up power by not doing this.

I'm very happy with the heads & cam package I have for the car. It's definately my package as I have been involved in all the details and parts selection. If the car doesn't make 400+ rwhp it's totally my fault! I made this a little harder, cost myself more money and risk giving up power by not getting professional help sooner.

As we don't have any LS1tech sponsor's in North Carolina, I didn't have the option to just get help from >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I hope one day SRP will join the ranks of the guys >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Key points: Learn all you can on the board but work with someone you can trust to give good advice because that will be more critical than part selection.

Free free to email me if you like.
