Bottom End Noise Help
I've been having some chattering noise coming from the engine for a month or so, so I decided to inspect a little further today. The noise is worst at startup but seems to go away when warm but sometimes at a light I can hear the noise off other cars.
99TA A4 internally stock. I took off the drive belt...still there. Took off the accessory belt and didn't seem to hear it so I spun the lower tensioner and it sounded like what I'd been hearing.
I figured I'd found the culprit and started to crawl back out and swung my head under the crank pulley that was still running and heard what really sounded like what I'd been hearing.
Hard to describe but it sounded like a revolving chan-chan-chan-chan-chan. It's reeeeally hard to see but the crank pulley looks like it might have a slight wobble in it. NOT in and out but side to side kinda. Hard to tell if it's just the engine wobbling. I've had a very light coolant weeping for some time.
Ideas? Help please. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Sad]" src="gr_sad.gif" />

Re: Bottom End Noise Help
get the rpms up from idle (2000 rpms or so) and then look at the crank pulley.
You are probably seeing the wobble from the engine shaking at idle.

Re: Bottom End Noise Help
Went and did that. The wobble that I was seeing from the sides is gone but looking at the crank bolt from straight on, there still seems to be something not perfectly centered.
I don't know if this is normal or if it should stay dead center. I mean it's minimal but noticeable.
With the engine at 2k rpms I crawled from the front to the back and the noise was about the same but more noisey around the crank pulley. Nothing sounded "bad" though.
Would a bad seal couse this? Ideas?

Re: Bottom End Noise Help
Nope, no loss in power. Nothing out of the ordinary except this noise. No KR either the last time I checked atap which is one thing I was worried about.
I know little about internal workings but want to get an idea if this is something that might be damaging the crank or bearings.
What would signs of that be?
If it's just noise from a bad seal then I can deal with it for a while until I put a cam in and change the seal and maybe a new chain/gears. I CAN'T afford a new crank/block/any other expensive item right now though and don't want to send my motor to an early grave for something I might can fix or avoid.
