Ive got a 2000 Camaro SS and was thinking of doing a cam, but that was it. I dont want to make any other modifications besides the cam. No boring, changing of heads, block, etc. With the biggest one, will I need matching rocker arms, lifters, springs, etc. If not all, please list all that will be needed. Is that cam gonna have a lope to it. How much power am I looking at with this cam?

 

Bigger not always better. Check out some of the thunder racing and MTI cams. They make good power. Do a search plenty of dynos and info.

Ok, well since you reply that, let me rephrase that. What is the best cam that I can get that will give me the most power and sound and that I wont have to do any other mods to make it work. (Besides the matching components)

 

With stock heads, my vote it the Gm Hot cam. Do a search on it. Some Thunder cams work well, too. Like the TR 220 or 224. But, the Hot cam seems to make about the same power with lower lift, so you won't worry about breaking springs. And, it's way cheaper and sounds nasty. A few guys run HUGE cams with stock heads, but their #'s aren't much higher. A stock head will only flow so much.

 

Are the GM cams good and reliable? So you are sure that it will lope? Ive got FLP's and Borla Catback, so you will hear the difference right? I want a muscle car sound that lopes pretty darn good!

One big Cam will be the TR 230/224.It will be alot more power than the Hotcam.You should have it tuned in after to get the most of it.Also you'll need new springs and a good time to change the timing chain.

There are alot of better cams for the power, you can get em with a lil better lope to. However, with stock heads, a hotcam will be right up your alley for the price. It is very affordable, and I'm thinking about going the same route. Try doing a search for some sound clips, as I've heard a few in the past

I would [not] use your stock springs with that cam. I would recommend Comp Cams 918 springs. You can re-use your stock steel retainers with these 918 springs. Your stock lifters would be fine.

Personally, I would use the Thunder Racing TR-220 cam, but you want a rough idle. I think drivability is more of a concern that the rough idle your wanting, but who am I to tell you what cam to buy. Don't know if you have emission testing where you live, but that Hot Cam will play hell passing most Roller Tests.

The Thunder Racing 224° on a 112°LSA will lope pretty damn hard also. Makes good power with stock heads also.

 

I get all my parts from MTI and I guess what Im saying is what is the best cam that I can get for the most horse and sound (lope) without doing any other mods. I want to purchase a MTI cam, so I need opinions on there cams.

 

You never stated that you only get parts from MTI in your initial thread so alot of guys have given you their opinions and personal choices for nothing. What is the reason for limiting yourself to one shop - someone else may have something better and most probably for a better price. Sounds to me like the consensus is the GM Hotcam if you aren't going to do heads at this point.

Sorry. I guess Im becoming a little confusing. I said that I was leaning toward a MTI cam but havent decided. The only reason why I said that I would get one from them is because I buy all my stuff from them. So you dont know if they offer a good cam from MTI that you wont have to do any other mods other than the cam and its components.

 

got another vote for the tr 230/224. this cam rocks in cam only cars w/ headers. i've got a heads and cam car and it dosent feel near as strong as a friend of mine's w/ the thunder cam only. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" />

 

If you buy "all yourt parts" from MTI, I would suggest you call MTI and ask these questions to them.

 

I never said that I was going to get my cam from MTI, I just wanted some opinions on ones from there. If no one had one, then I wanted the best one without doing other mods no matter where its from. If I wanted MTI's opinion, then I wouldnt be on this forum asking these questions. I mean thats what this site is for.

See theyre talking about stock LS6 heads though, Ive got LS1 heads and dont plan to change them. What I need is the best cam (most power and sound) for my internally stock LS1.
