Comp with XE lobes , 224/224 568/568 112 . I/C is 112 . Should I advance it 4 degrees ? From straight up to 4 deg advance how much will it change the RPM band ? using a rollmaster dual chain and its a 346ci .

cheers.

Don't advance it. Install it on a 112 ICL. You will hurt the high end of the power band if you advance it.

The cam you're looking at will make best power installed with 0 advance or with 2 degrees of retard. That will get you in the 44-46 degree ABDC window for best power with a 346 LS1. Don't advance it. That cam staight up with 0 advance will make peak power at 6200 rpms. It will make about 5 rwhp less everywhere above 5000 rpms and peak at 6000 with 4 degrees of advance ground in.

The thunder 224 and MTI c2 are both 4 degrees advanced with a 112 lsa (108 degree intake centerline). I would advance it. I spoke with Paul at thunder yesterday and he told me that my cam (110lsa with 4 degrees advance {106 intake centerline}) would be fine. Some have told me to retard it six degrees bringing my intake centerline to 112 and Paul seemed to think that this would make my cam peak at 6300, too high for what I want. Just my opinion ofcourse.

Where it peaks and what it does to the top end power are two different things. The "peak" moving up slightly is farless important than dropping the power across the upper range in my opinion.

Also, just because they have the cam ground with 4 degrees of advance doesn't mean that is where it should be installed at. I would bet that MTI does not install them very often at 4 degrees of advance.

Im sure Patrick G is correct from testing cams and positions of them. I just want to comment on moving cam for tuning cars performance, different than getting peak hp readings. If you dont have cars gearing, stall speed, total weight, exhaust set up,(lack of headers) set ideal for your cam choice, than advancing cam can have positive effect on cars performance. I proved this with my own. I had very sluggish launch and 60 ft. with cam at 112*(lsa 112*) i advanced to 106* and didnt lose mph anywhere only gained at 1/8 mph and matched 1/4 speed. if car was set up properly it would pay to retard cam back to 112*, but i think people should consider this when tuning car. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

Patrick , If I use this cam at 112 c/l with stg 2 heads , wont the thing want to rev above 6700 ? Seeing as Im on a mostly stock bottom end , 108 or 110 c/l will keep the revs down a bit to be safer , but still make plenty of power . What do you think ?

Most guys here with 224 112 , 108 c/l MTI and Thunder cams have installed them straight up with excellent results , yeah ?

r8LS1,

If you get a 224/224 112LSA cam +0, it will make peak power at 6200 and carry it nicely to 6600-6800. There is no need to shift it this high as peak power is still down lower.

A 224/224 112LSA +4 cam will make peak power around 6000-6100 and will carry power to 6500-6600. It will be about 5 rwhp and tq less than the +0 cam, but it will still make lots of power. We're talking small changes here, but the +0 cam will make more power and torque everywhere above 3000 rpms than its +4 counterpart.
