Anyone ever see this type of failure? Engine is a 408 with Patriot LQ9 Stage III, Texas Giant cam. Engine made funny ticking sound, down on power a little, I opened her up and found this with three lifters. What's up with this comp??? These are supposed to be the high reving, high power lifters. Anyone have a clue what caused it? No other damage to any other part in the engine was found...

it is very commen for the "r" lifters to come apart.
call comp. he will tell you why it is youre fault there product failed.
I would not run them in anything. get a set of caddy lifters for 200 and be done

Comp "R" lifters are preload sensitive and it is preferable to run adjustable rockers with them.
I have to agree with quick that there are other options nowadays like Morrel, Morrel "link shaft" and Caddi high lift.

This is a very well known issue with the comp lifters and like preator said, they are very preload sensitive. Preload on them is supposed to be in the .003 range, if you were off by .004 on you preload you could have a negative lash issue, not good.
Pick up a set of the new caddy racing lifters(~$250) or the morels(~500)

Sorry to hear of the problems. Comp R's without an adj valvetrain = problems. You need a set of Caddy racing lifters or Morels for your app.
I've had the opportunity to compare a set of Morels to the Comp's. There's no comparison and it shows you get what you pay for!

One other reason that may have caused your lifter to come apart is valve float. If your valve spring goes to valve float it will let the plunger body from your lifter hit the retainer too hard and break it. If you have had your springs on your motor for awhile you may want to have the spring pressure checked just to be safe.
