Heads/cam break in questions

I've been running royal purple 10w-30 which is synthetic for as long as I've had the car. I'm in the middle of a H/C swap and my question is, what oil should I use for the first 100 miles? Should I go to a lesser grade non-synthetic oil or just stick with royal purple? Either way I plan on changing the oil after 100 miles. Is this the correct way to break in a H/C setup? I always drain the oil right before firing the motor up after the swap and use some non-synthetic (cheap) oil for the startup. After getting the car up to operating temps, drain the oil/filter and then use the same oil your normally run.

Metal dust in the oil is normal correct?

xssive, I've never seen metal dust in my oil except after the first oil change or two when my motor was new. When you were scraping head gaskets off a lot of the graphite may have fallen into the motor and maybe that is what you are seeing. Just pay close attention during your next oil change.

Yes, "metal dust" is normal for the first hundred miles. It is the bearing wearing in (also known as breaking in) to the journals. If it persists, then see your mechanic, person that installed them, or go in and find out why. Could be any thing.
