rotella 5w40 syn anyone using?

While discussing which oil we like with my engine builder I told him I've been using it and he then admited they do also. It was one of his secrets. He hadn't heard of the synthetic and was using the refined crude Rotella. He's a local circle track engine king and said they found 14 HP on the engine dyno with standard 15W-40 Rotella at 7,000. They couldn't believe it so they drained and filled with Kendall racing 20W-50 and lost the HP then still sceptical stopped and drained and refilled with the Rotella and got it right back. Now they run it exclusively and so far it's been an excellent oil for their racing engines. They build a lot of them as they have the best track record in the area. He was interested in trying the synthetic after I showed him my pick-up's top-off jug when I was picking up an engine from him.
I've been using it for the last two changes in the Firehawk and I'm not afraid to beat on it. It's been in my 2001 Silverado HD with 8.1 (496) gas engine for the last 4-5 changes and before that I was using the standard Rotella. My GF delivers mail for the USPS and I run standard Rotella in her work beater rural mail route '90 Sunbird. One of my customers has a '66 Shelby Cobra replica with a 7,000 RPM 351W that I put the synthetic in it also.
I change oil by the indicator on the truck and hawk but the Sunbird is the real test as it's constant stop and go 5-6 days a week with extended changes and the oil works excellent. My engines stay clean and make great power. When heavy towing with the 496 Silverado running the recommended 5W-30 I would witness oil burn off of the stick when stopping for fuel but with the Rotella it is stable. The price is great for a wide viscosity synthetic. Wal-Mart has the best price but rarely has any on the shelf. I usually order it through O'Reilly but had to tell them about it first as they didn't stock it or even know about it. Heck I didn't either until I was looking for some Rotella at Wal-Mart and stumbled upon it. Wal-Mart regular price and O'Reilly's wholesale price is right shy of $20 a gallon.
I got turned onto it after Comp Cams started recommending Rotella for flat tappet cams due to the higher Zinc levels that the EPA has regulated out of gas oil. I don't know if much is left in Diesel oil now but the oil works great and is reasonable so I don't see any reason to quit.

there is also a lot of cleaning agents in the Rotella that make it good to use. I Use Royal Purple 10W40 in my T/A but my beater I use the Rotella, and am now not burning any oil, and it runs better.

It's in the crankcase right now. Without an oil analysis you can't specualte on what it's doing for the motor. For the price it's probably a Group III manmade synthetic and not a PAO based synthetic like the higher end, Amsoil, RP and Redline. Still not a bad buy for what you get.

Rotella has gone to the new CJ spec now and as a result it has the reduced zinc values that regular passanger car oils now have. Not good for flat tappet cams or forged pistons. I am getting ready to try Valvoline Race Oil 851 spec. It has increased zinc content for forged parts and flat tappet cams.
