Default cam swap info *searched*

hey guys im doing a cam swap and im just trying to put together a parts list so i have everything i need. i tried searching..but i didnt come up with much

Of course your gonna need :
cam
valve springs
retainers
keepers
pushrods
someone said comp or crane makes a handy little tool so you dont drop a valve
and i would assume i should prolly do a timing set while i got it apart

question is
do i need to order lifters...or do cams come with lifters matched for the cam?
i will prolly be doing the comp 218 218

any help would be appreciated!

No lifters needed, you have to pull the heads to get the lifters off anyway.

And it's got a lot of great info...very good write up.

Re: lifters...I don't think you'll want to get into that unless you're doing a head swap as well. Otherwise, you'll be pulling the heads off just to change them.

If you are doing a head swap, well, I'd guess that depends on personal choice. For myself, I went ahead and changed them...you're already there, might as well take care of it.

get new head bolts if you're not using ARPs or Ktechs

Stock head bolts can't be reused, they're a torque to yield . . . meaning they stretch when torqued. You run the risk of breaking them off if they're reused. New one's come as a kit (one side at a time), or bought individually.

Exactly. We used LS7 lifters on MOD's car and they're fine w/ the MS4 big lift cam.

ya im really dont think i want to do a head swap just yet. I was hoping i would be able to do the cam without having to change lifters so i wouldnt have to deal with taking the heads off....thats a project for a different day, and a new wallet

Seriously man go bigger than a 218/218, that is a TINY cam, and you will just want to go bigger once you get it started back up. There are plenty of big cams that are perfectly suited for everyday driving.

Lifters may or may not be needed.
I didn't think I needed new ones with only having 38k miles one the car. I did a MS4 / PRC S1 head swap and guess what? Bad lifters.

Think of spending $130 on new LS7 lifters as an insurance policy. Taking heads on and off is the suck big time. I did it three times.

Oh yeah its good insurance but the OP is running a 218 cam, thats a real baby cam. I wouldnt even bother with the lifters.

some of you are saying that the 218 maybe to small and not really worth it, and ive heard this from a few other people as well.

Would the comp 224 .581 be a good choice for a starter cam with good or average cam driveability?
