Longer bolt is the way to pull it off. I bought 3 different lengths that were longer than the stocker, it saves all of this trouble.

you can tell by the taper on the end of the tap, the more of a taper on the end the easier it will be to start and less chance of it not going in straight.

it really wont make too much of a difference, it just makes it a hell of alot easier. less of a chance to screw up the treads altogether.

yeah i f'd up my threads when i put my pulley on. i tapped it nice and slow with some grease on the end to try and capture the filings. the guys at the local machine shop just let me borrow a tap. just lube it up and go slow and you should be ok.

I went to ACE (the helpful hardware place) for a tap when I biffed my threads. They had a tap that worked great. I bought a longer bolt while I was there too.

It all worked out in the end

Just an opinion for guys considering helicoils, Wurth makes a product called a Time-sert. It is a threaded sleeve for fixing threads instead of a coil. Much stronger and longer lasting. It's a more expensive than a helicoil, as it comes with a drill bit, tap, and inserting tool, but it's worth it in the long run.

Well I got my tap in today. It was the bullet ended one, and it worked perfectly. I also used a magnet tip'd pointer up in there to clean up all the shavings.
