Default TQ to yeild head bolt install ???

I finished up installing the GM TQ-to-yeild bolts a second ago and I cant stop second guessing my self that I did something wrong. When reading the LS1-how-to directions they made it sound like turning these bolt would be a bitch. It took a little effort, but barely, and I definatly wouldn't ahve needed a friend like the directions said i might??? I did use a pretty big breaker bar before to TQ them down but how hard was it for everyone else to do these?

Did mine yesterday and had same thoughts. I think if u use a 2' bar is not that bad.

I checked with my torque wrench to see what they wound up being and they were around 85 ft. lb. (which is what the arp bold are so I think we are ok)

Just seems like a strange way to fasten something when every other bold is set to a torque spec.

I understand the TQ-to-yeild concept when connecting the aluminum heads to the cast iron bock - but man LS1howto had me all worked up about how hard this was gonna be and I didnt even strugle. I broke a sweat to get the old head bolts out - but then again I used a 3/8" rachet for that

As long as you set the initial torque, then did the TTY in sequence and did the two passes so your bolts wind up oriented as shown in ls1howto you are fine.

I think TTY attempts to take the friction component out of the equation, so you turn the bolt to stretch it a certain length irrespective of the force it takes to do that.

I'm glad you created this thread. I'm about to torque my heads down using the GM bolts. Now I know what to expect as for the effort involved. The same thing had me thinking with the instructions on torquing the crank pulley bolt. The author (jmX) says he's never been able to get the full 140 degrees after the initial 37 lb ft with the new TTY bolt. 240 lb ft is a lot but I got mine to that point without a grunt using an 18" breaker and 2 foot of conduit. I think it all has to do with the tools, body mass and perspectives. I sure appreciate jmX's article though.

Is it any different doing aluminum heads to cast iron block?
