good idea cause it cant hurt. hopefuly the rods in these engines are stronger in the 4cyl. I referenced earlier. but the starters are def. high torque. good luck though, hopefully its only something simple.

Yep, all depends on how much "nuts" these starters have. I've seen alot of beemers hydro-locked and the starter won't bend the rods. Hopefully your battery was low from the car sitting while you did the H/C install.

You'll know when you pull the heads off. If a rod is bent, that piston will not come all the way to TDC.

OK heads are off

Turned it over by hand several times and all the pistons seem to come to TDC (flush with the block or a little out of the block)

Cant see any of the runners until the valvetrain is disassembled. Taking the heads to the machine shop tomorrow for inspection ...

so no marks on the pistons then either? if they cant find any cracks in the ports, better have them magnufluxed (does that work on alum. parts?) prolly not.

Cleaned everything up and wiped everything down. Block *looks* fine.

Took the heads to the machine shop today ... hole in the intake runner of Cylinder 1 ... as 90% of you had thought. It was the size of a pen tip.

Shop is going to fix the heads and have them for me by Friday.

Then I can try this again ...

fix them? as in weld up the hole? well, where else are they thin? how long till the next one pops? Im scared for you if thats the case. more like Im scared for your bottom end. get some pics of the port work, so we can all see where the ports are thin and where to avoid overporting.

Wow, luckily the motor was never fired. Over my 4 years on this forum, this is the first time I see something like that on ported heads.

I agree with Iroc though, I wouldn't run these on my motor.

Thanks for the warnings guys. I share your concerns. I am having the machine shop look over everything to make sure there are no other problems with the other runners.

All things considered, these heads set me back apx. 1500 (CND) ... quite the chunk of change to junk em.

If and when I do another H/C swap, I am going with AFRs and calling it a F'in day.

I would be raising hell to get a refund. Thats BS! They about costed you your whole motor and your still considering putting them back on. I dont think so.

I know *exactly* where you guys are coming from, but New heads arent an option.

I dropped by the shop today and talked with the owner/machinist. I told him I was very reluctant to put these heads back on without any sort of guarantee's or assurances that they were OK. He is going to check the heads again once the welding is done and then send them out to have them pressure tested. He is being very open/willing/helpful with all of this ... mainly because he knows it is his Bad.

If they heads are no good once the repairs are done, we will go from there.

yeah, Id be pressing HARD for a full refund. its bad enough that they damaged your heads, which in the end, even if they refunded you your money, cost you money in the heads and gaskets/fluids/bolts/TIME. even if they fix them, and they are fine, they should still be doin something to compensate your time and out of pocket expense to reinstall them.

but good luck man. and please post pics.
